The Monster Book of Monsters - Task 1

Recommended Posts

The one thing any reader (or would be reader) of the Monster Book of Monsters is going to remember is the spell cast on the book that causes it to act like the monsters featured inside. (Oh and I’ve got some healing ointment if anyone has been unlucky enough to have been bitten already).

What I’d like to know is what would happen if more magical publishers got on board with this gimmick. What other books with themed enchantments might we see?

Come up with a way of customising a book of your choice (wizarding or muggle) with a spell that represents what it’s about in some way. Tell us about it in 100 words or more.

Goshawk's Guide to Herbology can be paired with the magical spell of Viresco. Viresco, like many of the spells in the wizarding world, is a Latin-based word meaning to flourish and grow, or it can also be defined as to become green. The Viresco spell forces flowers to grow upon the book's cover when it is cast upon Goshawk's Guide to Herbology. The combination of these relates to the book because, as we know, Herbology is a subject that involves magical plants in the wizarding world, and forcing the growth of plants would fit the book's theme quite nicely and appropriately.

The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection is a Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook by Quentin Trimble that first years are required to have at Hogwarts. Its magical publisher decided to give it a custom touch by enchanting its canon dark black cover to simulate the Knockback Jinx. On touching the book cover, the handler is thrown backwards as if the Knockback Jinx has been cast upon them, with a force directly proportional to the amount of pressure applied on the book cover during touching. To prevent this, one must use a counter - spell like in duelling, such as Protego or Expelliarmus, on the book cover, to stop the book cover from doing that the next time it is touched, and then re - attempt to touch or open the book without mishap. Most choose to use the Disarming spell because it keeps the book neutral for a longer time.
