Denizens of the Deep - Task 1

Recommended Posts

Giant squids are some of the most fascinating and mysterious creatures on earth and the members of the magical subspecies are even more so. Here at Hogwarts, we’re incredibly lucky to have one of these magnificent dwellers of the depths living on our grounds, basking in the sunshine and occasionally rescuing a student who happens to fall in. Trouble is, nobody quite knows how that came about….

Let’s speculate! In at least 100 words, please share your theory as to how our friendly neighbourhood squid came to live in the Great Lake

I imagine our giant squid was being sought after for research by muggles because it is such a grand creature with the possibility of magic, and muggles are somewhat lacking in research on such creatures. Our squid must have wandered into the Great Lake to avoid muggles, perhaps using some magical ability to seek out other magical beings for a safe space, such as the young wizards and witches at Hogwarts. Unlike the muggles, these wizards were kind to the beast, letting the squid roam the Great Lake despite having more capabilities to remove it. I want to think our giant squid became fond of the students over the years, finding a home in the Great Lake rather than an escape.

Our magical giant squid was brought by Godric Gryffindor as a pet and also served to provide the school with ink. When Hogwarts was founded, students were few and funds were low. Budgets had to be cut and ink was expensive. Godric Gryffindor found a solution by bringing Annabelle, our giant squid to live with us in the Hogwarts castle to provide ink for the whole school to be able to write with the quills, and Annabelle came to live with us. However, there was no place big enough to put her so Godric Gryffindor let her live in the Great Lake. Of course, the other creatures didn't complain, because Annabelle was very friendly. As time passed, and students began to bring their own quills and ink in inkpots, along with other stationery from the Flourish and Blotts shop, and also as the school's funds rose slowly, Annabelle's function of providing squid ink was no longer required as earlier, except in cases of emergencies. However, Annabelle had become a loved member of the school and stayed on, deciding not to disappoint the children and house pets, and not to go away anymore.

Our Great Lake is home to not just our Giant Squid but also to a great number of other creatures such as Grindylows, Selkies and Kelpies. So in my opinion, our Giant Squid’s species must’ve been there long before Hogwarts was founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. However, over time, its family died out due to the lack of enough resources, and our Giant Squid who was only a baby at that time, would have died as well, if not for the intervention of Helga Hufflepuff. She wanted to save the species, but it was too late, and she could only save one of them. Since she couldn’t save the others, in order to prevent the extinction of such a magnificent species, she decided to imbue the baby Squid with some potent magic, which would help it thrive and live for centuries.

I think our squid was hunted endlessly and had to continuously keep moving in order to stay alive untill one day a kind stranger came across the terrified squid. He saw how afraid the squid was of him because of how he was treated by his fellow wizards and promised to protect him.

Which he did, anyone who tried to hurt of capture the squid the man defended him with magic and when he eventually manged to gain the squids trust, he moved him somewhere he could be free and safe to live.

Which happened to be the hogwarts grounds.

I would imagine this happened before hogwarts was built and when it was built, the giant squid saw all the wizards and witches and maybe he got a bit nervous and wanted to flee at first. But when he saw they meant him no harm and most of them were children he sought to protect them like he was protected.
