Point Earning Opportunities (Autumn Term 2020-21)

Recommended Posts

The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths.

In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back!

The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul.

Class sign-up opens on the 1st of September 2020 and will remain open until December 20th so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself)

The next are the creative projects offered each month by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, visit the 'Departments' tab on the main website. Don't be shy: your submissions are anonymous during the rating period. You can get started by going to your profile and telling us 'How you Got Into Harry Potter' in the designated section - that will earn you a cool 10 points!

Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things.

All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too).  The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with.

Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

We're already 10 days into term. Have you picked your classes yet? I know some particularly enthusiastic souls are already busy turning huge amounts of homework in (go you!). If you haven't started yet though, don't worry. Remember that term is a marathon not a sprint. You have plenty of time: relax and enjoy it.

If you're looking for something to do that isn't homework (while still earning some glory for Gryffindor) then HOL already has some very tempting options. Stop by the Departments and check out this months projects. The Library Department are inviting you to imagine what your application would look like were you ever to go for the job of Hogwarts professor and then to play swapsies with Harry Potter characters. The Art Department are decking out Platform 9 3/4 in decorations to celebrate the new school year and asking you to depict your favourite chapter from the HP books in image form.

Points Available: A maximum of 80 (you can get 40 just for joining in)

Deadline: September 30th for Art and October 1st for Library

And now some updates from HOL's various newsrooms. Each house newspaper gives you the chance to earn 50 points from regular submissions (like articles, puzzles, recipes, graphics etc) and an 40 by completing their extra challenges. That's 90 points per paper and with 3 papers open for submissions right now that's a whole lot of points (270, if you want to get technical).

The Alte Sententiam is almost as fun to say as it is to submit to. It's Ravenclaws paper and they can't wait to receive your submissions. If you have an idea for an article, get in contact with Gail Allen. Check out their Legendary Drabble Babble and Creative Writing Bingo challenges over in The Great Hall on the main forum.

Deadline: 30th September

Have you paid a visit to the Dungeons yet? Well, their newspaper, the SerpenTimes, is open for business. This issue's theme is Snake Eyes and they can't wait to see what you make of it. Remember to check out the SerpenTimes Exclusives as well for the chance to snag an easy additional 40 points. You'll find all the info you need over in the SerpenTimes forum on the Slytherin Common Room.

  Deadline: 15th October

And last (but by certainly no means least) there's our very own purrr-fect publication, The Paw Print. We're getting into the swing of a new term with a theme of 'Patterns and Rhythms' (though we'll accept any submissions whether they're related to the theme or not). We also have Prose and Cons where you can snag yourself some extra points by captioning pictures, creating a leonine list or indulging in a spot of creative writing. so make sure you quick step your way over to the Quivering Quill and tell us what you'd like to write!

Deadline: 23rd October

However you're spending your September, I hope it's magical!

2020 is nearly at an end and so is the Autumn term. Most classes will have a final deadline of 15th January but make sure you double check yours so you know for certain when you need to get any last minute assignments sent in by. We're lagging a little behind in that cup race right now so let's start off 2021 right and snag a few extra points if we possibly can. :D

If you signed up for Secret Elf, the deadline is drawing near! Remember to get your gift sent off to the organisers at the dedicated activity email before 11:59 PM HOL-time on the 31st of December.

Land of the Sweets is also in full swing. Make sure you head over to the main forum to enjoy some of the sweet, festive goodness on offer before January 17th!

Go go Gryffindor!
