  1. The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths. In this post, the staff give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the term, we’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back! The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. All classes will give you the chance to earn 300 points in a term through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those homework points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul. Class sign-up opened on the 1st of September 2023 and will remain open until the 20th of December, so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself. The next are the creative projects offered each month by the Library and Art departments. Department projects alternate each month, one month you will get to be artsy and the next will give you opportunity to brush up on your writing. Visit the 'Departments' tab on the main website. Don't be shy: your submissions are anonymous during the rating period. You can get started by going to your profile and telling everyone 'How you Got Into Harry Potter' in the designated section - that will earn you a cool 10 points! Finally there's the HOL Newspaper, the HOwLer. This is a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, it will also offer creative prompts and the chance to submit your own puzzles, graphics and more. Keep an eye on the Newspaper section of the main HOL Forum for updates about the latest issue. https://hol.org.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=612 Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check the replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

  4. Who does not love some balloons? They come in all shapes and sizes, some magical ones even change color or hum tunes. You are curious and get yourself a balloon, but be careful of those trees! Pair each tree with a balloon adjacent horizontally or vertically. This should be a 1 to 1 relation. Balloons never touch each other, even diagonally. The clues outside the grid indicate the number of balloons on that row/column. Send your solution to me (Prof. Maxim Trevelyan) via PM (Subject: Carnival Balloon and Trees) by 11:59 pm HOL-time on August 31st 2023 to earn 15 rubies.
  5. For it to constantly draw people in, a carnival must always update their games, stalls and rides. But a time when a new ride is introduced is very crucial to its reception. Solve the fallen letters below to figure out when a new game at this summer carnival will be revealed. Click here for a bigger picture. Send your solution to me (Prof. Maxim Trevelyan) via PM (Subject: Carnival Fallen Letters) by 11:59 pm HOL-time on August 31st 2023 to earn 15 rubies.
  6. You’re hurrying back into the Wizengamot offices to tell them that you’ve gathered all but one piece of missing evidence when you hear raised voices. You peep around the door to the Chief Warlock’s chamber and see her wagging her finger at an elderly member whose plum coloured robes are in total disarray. “What have I said about bringing him to work!” “He gets bored …” the old man mumbles. “Cases almost thrown out of court, the ministry in an uproar…” The chief warlock takes a step back and wipes her brow. “He was just trying to be helpful,” the elderly man explains, “I trained him to tidy things away at home. He’s just a little overzealous, that’s all.” You jump as something soft touches your hand. You look down and blink. A smiling demiguise offers you a tattered piece of parchment. The final piece of evidence. As you watch, the little creature trots over to the elderly Wizengamot member, clambers up onto his shoulder, nestles in, catches sight of the less-than-impressed look on the chief’s face and promptly disappears. You catch the chief warlock’s eye and hold up the final piece of evidence. She cracks a reluctant smile. “Just promise me you’ll invest in a demiguise sitter next time,” she sighs. Once all the furore has died down, you receive a framed certificate, thanking you for all your tireless work to protect the rule of law and signed by the chief warlock herself. Of well-meaning demiguises, there is not a single mention…. All rubies and beans have been awarded. Thank you all for using your keen legal minds to solve this mystery in the ministry!

  10. The Case of Fake Fashion Dear interns, this is the last case where you need to help Wizengamot to gather the misplaced evidence. It is quite an intriguing and stylish case that has cast a shadow of deceit over the wizarding fashion world—the Case of Fake Fashion. In the magical realm of fashion, Gladrags Wizardwear stands as a beacon of elegance and sophistication. However, a devastating discovery has sent shockwaves through this esteemed establishment. Someone, with nefarious intent, has stolen the exquisite clothing from Gladrags Wizardwear and replaced them with cheap imitations and shoddy robes. The once-thriving boutique now faces a crisis of credibility, and its reputation hangs in the balance. The Wizengamot, cognizant of the impact on both the fashion industry and the confidence of its patrons, calls upon your extraordinary skills to find the evidence in the Case of Fake Fashion. The Wizengamot places its utmost trust in your exceptional talents, relying on your resourcefulness, intellect, and bravery to retrieve the missing evidence and bring the perpetrators of this fashion fraud to justice. The future of the wizarding fashion industry and the community's trust in the Ministry's ability to protect and uphold justice hang in the balance. Task Ten Task Eleven Task Twelve
  11. Now it is time to put forth your theories as to what you think happened to the evidence in all three cases. Was it taken maliciously? Maybe a freak hurricane swept through the Ministry? Describe what you think happened in 100 words or more. Remember not to say where you think the evidence hides, just what you think happened so that it disappeared from the evidence room at the Wizengamot. Post your theories below to earn 15 rubies and 20 beans by June 29th 11:59 pm HOL time.
  12. You find several errant jewels where the evidence box was held and you follow the trail outside and up the winding stairs until you get to a magical garden in one of the departments. It also serves as a relaxation place when work just gets too much. You find that the jewels belong to several crowns that the store offered. Solve the puzzle below to get the jewels safely back into the evidence box. Find all of the crowns in the garden. Every crown is attached to one tree, and every tree is attached to one crown (so there is an equal number of crowns and trees). The clues tell you how many crowns are in that row or column. A crown can only be found horizontally or vertically adjacent to a tree. Crowns are never adjacent to each other, neither vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. A tree might be next to two crowns but is only connected to one. 13. There are several strands of fabric and twine scattered around the Wizengamot. Use careful deduction to connect the pieces together and solve the hashi puzzle below. Hashi is based on a rectangular arrangement of islands where the number on each island tells how many bridges are connected to it. The object is to connect all islands according to the number of bridges so: There are no more than two bridges in the same direction. Bridges can only be vertical or horizontal and are not allowed to cross islands or other bridges. When completed, all bridges are interconnected enabling passage from any island to another. 15. The Case of Eaten Sweets Another case with missing evidence, oh no! A storm of sugary chaos has been stirred up in the Wizengamot - The Case of Eaten Sweets. In the magical haven of Honeydukes, renowned for its assortment of confections, a shocking discovery has left the owners and patrons in a state of dismay. Someone, with an insatiable appetite for sweets, has devoured a significant portion of Honeydukes' cherished stock, leaving behind a trail of wrappers and empty shelves. The Wizengamot, aware of the gravity of this situation and the impact it has on the village's economy, calls upon your extraordinary skills to uncover where the evidence has been, mayhaps purposefully, misplaced. Drawing upon the knowledge and experiences gained from your previous investigations, you must delve into the depths of the Wizengamot, searching for the whereabouts of the missing evidence. Your journey will require meticulous attention to detail as you sift through the remnants of the evidence. Decipher cryptic symbols and untangle enchantments, for they hold the key to the truth behind this tantalizing confectionery theft. Task Seven Task Eight Task Nine
