  1. Opening a little early. Boards have been updated. I cannot promise how long I'll be awake tonight, we have a lovely stomach virus circulating through the house, which with 3 kids is totally not pleasant...you know it's only a matter of time, lol.

    Anyways, here we go.

    DI has 3 shots.

    MI has 2 shots.

Try to get them in tonight or in the morning, I might be headed out in the afternoon again (the tummy bug is also making rounds at my sister's house, so I don't feel bad about infecting them, lol).

  2. Opening firing thread since it's close to time. Both dens have 3 shots to fire. I'll check throughout the night (until I crash from my headache) and update the tasks in the dens!

Also of note, I might forget so Saturday night the firing thread will open late (one of my kids is bowling in the state tournament and the first day runs from 6pm - whenever they finish bowling 6 games). I will try to update the dens as soon as I wake up on Sunday but it might be later than that because she has to bowl Sunday morning from 8am - whenever she finishes 3 games. So needless to say, it'll be busy. However I will do my utmost to keep things moving along.

  3. Boards are updated. Firing thread is opening early tonight. I will try to check back periodically tonight, but as soon as I finish my laundry I'm going to sleep. If I don't respond to your shots tonight, I will do it first thing when I wake up tomorrow. Still, if you see this, post your shots. You never know when I'll actually wake up to get the baby a bottle or something throughout the night.

That being said, both dens have 3 shots tonight! Keep up the great work!

  4. The deadline for puzzles will be the same tonight. However, the firing thread will open early. I have a very, very early morning on Wednesday and will not be able to stay up late. As soon as I have puzzles in and locations open after 9 pm pacific time, the thread will open again.

However, I will not be able to stay up late so if you don't post after it is open tonight, then I will be asleep. But I will send the tasks to you as soon as I wake up in the morning. Which should be really crazy early.

  5. Day 02:

Opening the thread a little early. Not sure how late I'll be up tonight. If I don't respond, feel free to post and I'll send stuff to you all when I wake up. The board has been updated to show shots.

DI PMed all 3 puzzles correctly. They have 3 shots to fire.

MI did not turn any puzzles in, they have 0 shots.

    DI: 3 shots

    MI: 0 shots

  6. I'm going to bed. DI, post whenever you can and I'll send you the tasks when I wake up.

Important thing to note, I will not be home after 3pm pacific time tomorrow until 9pm. So if you don't post before 3pm pacific time, you're SOL.

  8. A little late, but better late than never! Well, you might wish it was never after this challenge is done! Welcome to the 2015 Battleship Den Challenge. I'll do a brief explanation of how it works, the rules, etc. If you have questions feel free to ask your prefect and they'll either explain it to you, or ask me for clarification.

    What is Battleship?
Battleship is a board game where the main objective is to sink the other teams ships. In this case, each den will have a total of 7 ships placed on a board (the prefects will choose the locations - with or without input of the den - it's their choice) and the other den will do their best to sink all the ships.

    How do I play?
This is a bit different than normal Battleship (if you've ever played that game). The two dens will compete against each other. The first den who has all their ships sunk loses. I think it's pretty simple. We've always played this with three dens before, so with there only being two dens, it might just go faster than usual.

    How do we earn shots?
At the very beginning of the game each den has 3 shots. They'll pick three different locations on the other dens board to aim at. I'll then send the den a set of puzzles to solve in a specific thread in their den. In order for the shots to count against the other team, the puzzles for each specific location must be solved and sent to me via PM by a prefect or selected student (more on that later).

So as an example, the DI den chooses 3 locations and puts them in the firing thread (this will be in the battleship forum, this is where all shots fired will go). I'll send 3 puzzles to the den to answer. Say they can only get 2 answered before the 24 hours is up so they send me those answers. For those 2 specific locations, I'll put a hit or miss on the board. They'll be able to choose 2 more locations when the firing thread reopens. The third puzzle that they did not solve, they'll be able to answer later, but until they answer it they will not get that location or their third shot back. Each den has the opportunity to PASS on a puzzle, however they will not be able to get that location and there is a maximum of 3 passes for the whole challenge. Wouldn't it just suck if the one square you needed to complete the challenge was the one you passed on? Just saying...

I know it can be confusing, especially when I ramble on. So I'll try a simplified version as an example:

This is how DI's turn would have looked in that scenario:

We choose to hit MI's following locations:
    C4, D3, H10

DI managed to solve the puzzle for the C4 and H10 squares, but failed to solve the D3 puzzle before the deadline, but the other den solved all three of their puzzles. So once the deadline has arrived I color in the grid locations and the firing thread opens for the next day. WHen this happens it will look like this:

DI has 2 shots, MI has 3 shots to fire.

That next day after selecting their two new locations, DI managed to solve the two new puzzles, as well as the one they were not able to solve the first day. They will get those three locations colored in. The two new locations and the D3 square they had leftover from the previous day. Now the next time the firing thread opens, they will have all 3 shots again.

Who gets to select the locations?
There will be FOUR people in each den who will be allowed to select locations in the firing thread. I would prefer it be prefects who post and then any selected student. Once I have been sent the names of the students and prefects who have been chosen, they cannot be changed. NO ONE else is to post in the firing thread, EVER. Just myself and the selected students. It is also very important to note that you absolutely, positively may NOT edit any firing locations once they are placed in the thread. I don't care if you made a mistake, or one of the other people wanted a different location. If I see it, your den will be disqualified, as I consider it cheating. So don't do it!

Alright, so you might sort of understand how things are working now (I hope), but what does everything look like?

    THE GRID.

    grid.jpg

As you can see, it runs 1 - 10 across and A - J vertically. So, the upper left square is A1, the upper right square is A10, the lower left square is J1 and the lower right square is J10. If you don't know how to read a grid...I can't help you.

In the main thread there will be twogrids like the one above (one for each den). Based on the locations the den leaders have chosen for their ships the object will be to select squares. Once the puzzles are solved you will be able to tell what was hit. Blue squares are water (meaning you missed), red squares mean a hit. Once the ship is sunk, it will be crossed off. Once ALL ships have been sunk on a grid, the grid will be crossed off. A tally of locations (and whether they hit or miss) will be posted below the grid to help your den keep track.

    THE PUZZLES.
There will be different types of puzzles.

    1. FREE HIT.
The free hit square is exactly what it sounds like. There is no puzzle in that square, it is a free hit. When the answers are sent to me via PM the den will include the free hit location as well. So it'll look like   B3: FREE HIT.   when you send it in to me.

    2. Logic puzzles.
Yep, them good old school word logic puzzles. You have to love to hate them. But they are necessary as I feel torture adds spice to life.

    3. Sudoku Puzzles (aka Zenix killers)
Again, you either love them or hate them.

    4. Brain teasers.
Traditional brainteasers, which I don't think are all that hard to solve.

    5. Trivia.
The trivia will include HP book trivia as well as HOL Handbook trivia. This means you can actually go search for an answer.

    THE SHIPS.
There will be seven ships this year. There will be two size 2 ships, three size 3 ships, one size 4 ship, and one size 5 ship. The size of the ship correspondes with the number of squares it will take up on the grid. So a size 5 ship, will take up 5 squares on the grid. Ships may be placed veritically or horizontally, you are not allowed to place a ship diagonally.

    THE RULES.
I will PM the leaders of each den individually within the next few days. They will select the people to represent the dens for the firing thread, as well as picking ship locations. It is at the descretion of the den leader whether to select the locations themselves, or to have the den do it as a whole. I really don't care, so long as the locations and the leaders are sent to me before April 8th.

After I have received the above information from all dens, I will open the firing thread on April 10th at 12:01 am PST (or whatever we are in now) which is 3:01 am EST and 8:01 am HOL time (I think!). At that time, each den may post their selected locations to hit. You will start with three shots. As soon as I see your selected locations, I will go into your den and post your challenges. You will have until 9:00 pm  PST on April 10th to solve and to send the answers to me via PM. The only people who may PM the answers to me are one of the three selected in each den to have access to post in the firing thread. Then at 12:01 am PST the thread will be open to fire in again, with the boards all updated. When PMing me answers, try to use this type of format:

    Your den name:

    Firing on (other den name)
    B3, H2, C9

It will be easier for me to keep track of.

Please note. I do sleep. Quite a bit more now than I used to. I also have a very hectic life with 3 kids (one of which is a newborm). So, sometimes like when I am sleeping I won't be able to post your puzzles right away. I'm usually in bed within an hour (maybe 2) of the firing thread being opened. So if you don't get it in then, don't expect me to post in your den for quite a bit. I know, this will give you less time to solve, but that's the way it works. This is also why you are allowed 4 people to post in the firing thread. I would suggest poking around your den and maybe picking someone who is usually up and at home at that time so you have the longest amount of time possible to solve.

    IMPORTANT:
Please be advised that if you solve a challenge incorrectly you will lose that shot for that day. So the answers you PM to me must be correct. If not, then it's just like not solving it, and that location will roll over to the next day and you will only have 2 shots in the firing thread. I will advise you which answers are correct and incorrect in a PM back to you.

  9. It's almost October, therefore it's almost time for Gryfftoberfest! Before the actual activities begin however, we'd like to come up with a motto for this year. In the newly created area on the forum you will find a motto contest. Please participate! Immediately following the motto competition we will begin the sig and avatar contest. We do so hope you participate and have fun! There will be many more activities to come throughout the month of October, but we need your help to set the theme of this year's Gryfftoberfest!

  10. Hello Gryffindors and welcome to another new term here at HOL and Gryffindor! We hope to have a fun filled year and hopefully do better all around than we did last year, and of course we will totally need your help in doing so.

First, before we get into all the fun stuff, whether you are a new Gryffindor or a returning Gryffindor, if you have any questions, or need a reminder of the rules or help finding something that might have been moved, please visit this topic It should get you all caught up.

Now this year we're going to liven things up a bit and make some changes. Throughout the year you'll get to meet the staff and your prefects and so on. In September you will be sorted into your dens by our own Prof. Dario. Whatever den you get is the den you stay in for the year, so no asking to be put in a specific den or moved dens - it won't work. Everything is done randomly for the sorting. This year we will only have two dens so that we can increase activity in the dens and so that you can meet more of your fellow Gryffindor's. This year the dens are Disney based, the idea coming from Prof. Zenix.

Don't forget about the study room, where you can get help with your classwork or participate in any challenges there. There's the library, which is up and running again and some clubs and quidditch to join if you want.

For you new Gryffindor's, there's the LCPP (Lion Cub Pawtner Project) that you can sign up for so that you can have an older, experienced Gryffindor buddy (and totally like an instant friend) to help show you the way when you want it or need help. It's an awesome thing to be involved with. You olbies should also go volunteer to help the new students because it's a great and rewarding thing to do, plus you'll get to make new friends.

Now if I missed anything, which I more than likely did since I haven't written one of these topics in a while, I'm sure you can find it somewhere in the forums, or someone will add on to this post because our staff is on top of stuff like that.

So on behalf of the Gryffindor Staff, I want to say welcome (and so does Prof. Dario - he told me to type that) and I hope you have a great and fun time this year!
