Slick Centaur: “Sure. But I think that the thing that is chasing you is another centaur.”

Lily: “I know it is not a centaur. It was blue.”

Slick: “I think the blue thing you are talking about is a patronus. You can still ride on my back though.”

Ron: “Do you think this dragon is going to eat us?”

Harry: “I don’t think so. I think it is just going to get us far, far away.”

Hermione: “Do you think we are going to survive this?”

Harry: “I think that we can survive this.”

Ron: “Yeah. I think we got this.”

Hermione: “Ok. Then let’s do this!”

Most Common Snakes in Kentucky

By February Fortescue

I live in a rural area, so I run into these occasionally.

  1. Black Rat Snake. As far as Kentucky snakes go, this one is the biggest and the one I see most often. Thank goodness it isn’t venomous!
  2. Garter Snake. This is probably the second most common.
  3. Copperhead. Definitely has venom. Fortunately, humans rarely die after being bitten by one, with the fatality rate being listed as .01%.
  4. Timber Rattlesnake. These are a bit more lethal than Copperheads, but not much.
  5. Western Cottonmouth. Cottonmouths are venomous but account for less than 1% of all snakebite fatalities. In fact, on average, in the United States, between 7,000 to 8,000 venomous snake bites are reported each year, and approximately 5 of those are fatal. Not 5% – 5 bites out of 7,000.
  6. Black Racer. Very fast, faster than most humans, but they tire very quickly.
  7. Ribbon Snake. My college roommate kept one of these in our dorm.
  8. Ringneck Snake. Rather small.
  9. Green Snake. Also small. Loves to stay hidden.
  10. Water Snake. We see these sometimes.

Short Story

The White Mountain Wonders

By Hannah Lovegood

One day, I decided to go to the snowy mountainside down the road from me. So, I jumped out of my bed, ran over to my walk-in closet and I threw on my snowflake Converse sneakers and my green parka pants and a unicorn crop top with the parka jacket over that. Then, I grabbed my green beanie and threw my hair back in a ponytail, and then put my beanie on. Then, I went out and got Willow and Windy. Willow and Windy are the two little girls that I rescued from the biggest basilisk in the world. I brought them into my walk-in closet. Willow picked out her matching snowflake Converse and her violet parka pants and her dolphin shirt and her violet parka jacket. I gave Windy a pair of white converse and I gave her some pens so she could draw a design on them. She drew a little greenhouse on them. Then, she put them on, and then she put on her plants parka pants and a tie-dye shirt with her plants parka jacket. Then, I put Willow’s hair in a braid and I put Windy’s hair in a ponytail with a little braid. Then, I walked out of my walk-in closet with them and I grabbed my special snowflake backpack.

Then, I walked out of my house with the girls, locked up my house, grabbed my sled. I got in first, then I put Windy in a special little nook in the back. Then, I picked up Willow and put her on my lap. Then, I pressed the electrifying fast mode on. Then, we rocketed down the road and through a little forest. Then, I got out with Willow and Windy. Then, I tied up my sled to a tree. Then, we headed up the mountain together. The first thing that happened was that Willow made a snow angel. Then I found someone’s wand hidden under the snow and so I slipped that into my backpack. Then we went into the little gift shop and we found a smaller version of my snowflake bag. So, I got it for Willow. Then we went into the restaurant part. I ordered 3 hot chocolates, 1 big and 2 small. Then I ordered burritos for all 3 of us. Then, I ordered a strawberry snowcone for Windy because I didn’t get her anything in the gift shop. I ordered some banana bread for everybody. Then, I took all the food and the drinks into the glassed-in outdoor tables and we ate and drank our food and drinks.

After I finished my food, I noticed a little boy that looked like it was his birthday. So, I cleaned up our table and walked over with the girls. I walked over and said, “Hi. Happy birthday.” The little boy said, “Hey. Here’s a Harry Potter sorting hat for you. I don’t want it.” I said, “Thank you so much!” I gave the boy a big hug. Then, I put the sorting hat in my bag. Then, I pulled out a forest snow globe for the boy and I gave it to him. When I gave it to him, he jumped up and gave me an extra big hug, and said, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” Then I talked to his aunt who was with him and I learned that he could go ice skating with us.

So, I took all of us over to the ice skating rink. I helped put on the boy’s ice skates. Then, I pressed a button on the side of my Converse shoe and it popped out an ice skating blade. Then, I pressed the button on the girls’ shoes and blades popped out. Then we went on the ice and skated around. Then, we said bye to the boy and we went back to the restaurant. I got a pineapple smoothie for myself, a plum smoothie for Windy, and a blackberry lavender smoothie for Willow.

Then, we went back to my sled. We rode home and we went inside. We went into the kitchen to enjoy our smoothies.

The Nature Walk

By Hannah Lovegood

One day I took a walk

I found a leaf

I saw a squirrel

I skipped

I saw a friend

I saw a pup

I drew a snake

I hugged a tree

I enjoyed nature

I spun with enjoyment

I sang a song about nature

I took a picture of a deer
