  1. Application Part 4: Excellent Hunter!

Newt is always hunting for new magical creatures, so as his assistant, you have to have a great eye! Can you spot all the magical creatures (and a few miscellaneous things) in the puzzle below? Please send in your answer in an image!

If you have questions, please ask! :)

Due Date: December 7, 2016 (I extended the date since I was a little late in putting this up.)

Remember, please turn in all submissions by PM to Prof. Jenny Lupin!

  2. Application Part 3: Knowledgeable!

As Newt is researching and documenting some of the strangest and most exotic creatures in the magical world, his assistant must have a strong understanding of these creatures, too! An assistant should know basic answers to questions like, "What makes this creature magical? Why kind of personality to they have? How do they interact with their environment? Why are they an unusual coloring? Are they a predator or prey? or What about their anatomy/personality gives them their special magical qualities?" These are only some of the important questions that an assistant must ask in order to properly research and document these creatures!

For your task, Newt has asked you draw/diagram one of the most unusual creatures you have ever encountered during your own travels or research. Or, if you've never been on your own travels, create one of your own! Along with the picture, please point out at least 3 key features that makes this particular beast unusual, and give a brief description for each trait of why it is important for this creature.

If you have questions, please ask! :)

Suggested Due Date: November 26, 2016. Last Possible Due Date: December 7, 2016

Remember, please turn in all submissions by PM to Prof. Jenny Lupin!

  3. Application Part 2 - Logical!

When facing the unknown, Newt has to always be ready for anything. Thinking on his feet and being able to spot hidden clues are some of his most precious assets! As an assistant, you must be able to keep up with him, and even help him connect the dots on new clues if you want to locate the most clever of the magical creatures! Show your logical side by solving the logic puzzle below. It may be a little tricky, so partial points will be awarded for effort, even if you don't get the correct answer! Newt is looking for determination and perseverance, too, so don't give up!!

Newt Scamander is putting together a report on seven of the most recent magical creatures to be placed on the endangered magical species list. Help him determine the current estimated population (175, 280, 315, 350, 385, 455, or 490) for each species (one of which is a Niffler), as well as the country in which it lives (one of which is Norway) and the year in which it was officially recognized as endangered (one was listed each year from 1920 to 1926).

    1. The Moke is either the magical creature with a population size of 350 or the species that lives in Canada.
    2. The Chinese Fireball was listed 1 year before the species with a population size of 280.
    3. The seven species are the magical creature that lives in Canada, the Thunderbird, the magical creature added to the list in 1926, the magical creature with a population size of 385, the Phoenix, the magical creature added to the list in 1920 and the species added to the list in 1925.
    4. The Bowtruckle was listed 1 year after the Thunderbird.
    5. Neither the magical creature added to the list in 1926 nor the Phoenix is the magical creature that lives in Egypt.
    6. The magical creature that lives in Tanzania was listed sometime before the Thunderbird.
    7. The species with a population size of 455 was listed 4 years before the magical creature with a population size of 490.
    8. The Phoenix was listed 4 years after the Chinese Fireball.
    9. The magical creature with a population size of 455 was listed 1 year before the magical creature that lives in Brazil.
    10. Of the species added to the list in 1923 and the species that lives in Egypt, one has 315 surviving individuals and the other is the Demiguise.
    11. Of the magical creature that lives in Brazil and the magical creature that lives in Japan, one has 280 surviving individuals and the other was recognized as endangered in 1923.
    12. The magical creature that lives in Scotland doesn't have a surviving population of 350.

If you have questions, please let me know! I'm more than happy to help point you in the right direction! :)

Remember, please turn in all submissions by PM to Prof. Jenny Lupin!

  4. Application Part 1 - Adventurous!

Anytime Newt goes on a new excursion, he may be facing the constant threat of danger, uncharted territory, and powerful creatures with unknown magical abilities. It is of utmost importance that his assistant be just as willing as he is to jump right in amid the danger and do whatever is necessary! After all, without risk there is no reward!

For this part of the application, Newt is looking for someone adventurous and has asked you to tell a story about a time where you faced unparalleled excitement and/or danger when encountering an unusual beast. What obstacles did you overcome? What made the trip so crazy? And how did you react to any surprises you faced? In the end, how did you contain the situation? In at least 300 words, please tell us of your adventure! Feel free to use any style of writing you want (narrative, descriptive, etc), Newt just wants to hear about your grand adventure!

Suggested Due Date: November 10, 2016. Last Possible Due Date: December 7, 2016

Remember, please turn in all submissions by PM to Prof. Jenny Lupin!

  5. WANTED: ASSISTANT MAGIZOOLOGIST!

It is the mid-1920's, and there is a rumor floating around the wizarding world that the famous magizoologist Newt Scamander recently got himself in a bit of trouble while on a research excursion. Something involving some magical creatures getting loose and causing all sorts of chaos! While the details surrounding the situation are still rather unclear, a recent posting in The Daily Prophet suggests Newt is looking for an assistant! In true Newt Scamander form, the advertisement is a little... eccentric.

The application requires 4 parts, 1 for each trait Newt desires in an assistant, and in the end, only 1 assistant will be hired! One part will be posted approximately weekly in this thread. It is recommended that you turn in each task by the end of the week it is posted, however Newt will accept all parts of application submissions turned in by 11:59 pm HOL Time December 7th.

Please PM all application entries to Prof. Jenny Lupin here at the Gryffindor Common Room. I will be passing them along to Newt for further review. To ensure all submissions are properly filed, please include the in the subject line of the PM something such as the following: "Wanted Task 1 - HOL ID" and include your Name, ID and House in the body of the submission.

This contest is open to all members of HOL, and we hope you enjoy our Purple Common Room this month!

Each task submitted will earn you 10 beans. Newt and the Gryffindor staff will review all completed applications (you must turn in ALL 4 tasks to have a completed application and be considered for the job), and a winner will be announced! In case the top applicant accidentally gets eaten turns down the position, 2 back up candidates will also be announced. The top 3 will earn additional beans as follows:

1st Place: 60 beans (total of 100 earned)

2nd Place: 35 beans (total of 75 earned)

3rd Place: 10 beans (total of 50 earned)

Note: While you must turn in all 4 parts to be eligible to win this contest, if you want to turn in just 1 or 2 or 3 parts, that's fine, too. You'll still get the 10 beans per task. :)

If you have questions, please feel free to PM me and I will respond as soon as I can!

  6. It seems as though an announcement featuring all of the spectacular lions of HOL and a few of their friends has been long overdue – so without further wait, here it is! Each month (Except September, we already got that posted here! Woo!) features the greats from the house of the brave, and I am pleased to offer warm congratulations to all of them!

Exploding Snap is the award given to the most humorous lions for all of the laughter they bring us throughout the year. We would like to feature for this year Prof. Missa Matz for her humor provided during Gryfftoberfest in October. Eno Thomas received the award in December for being particularly humorous no matter what the occasion, and even hosted a game all about survival of the funniest (also known as Apples to Apples) to prove it! In February Chadwick Cadet warmed up the Common Room with continuous laughter and her secret stash of butterbeer she so graciously shared! Prof. Miette Bynny brought about by far the greatest Gryffindor blog post of the year as she used My Little Pony to advertise the Paw Print and received the award in April! And finally, Pandora Gotham wrapped up the year in June by posting some of the funniest posts and status updates we have seen all year! Congratulations to all of our great Gryffs following in the footsteps of our beloved Fred & George Weasley!

Gryffindor students in their second year or up are eligible for the Golden Snitch award, which is given to the lions who are vocal, active, encouraging, and enthusiastic in all ways for the house! To start us off, Nina Messersmith got the award in November for her hard work and contagious energy at the start of term for classes! Laurie Lovegood followed her up with the award in January as she actively fought to earn last minute points and get as many of them as possible for the year. Hailey Potter continued the trend through March as she started to really out-nerd herself in all of her classes and OWLs, bringing in tons of points for Gryffindor while still being in charge of one of the most active clubs in Gryffindor during that time! Risa Swan finished up the year in May as she not only earned a lot of points for Gryffindor, but also encouraged a ton of activity and communication in her house den during that time!

Following the Golden Snitch award is the Lively Lionet award, as it is given out based on the same criteria, but is for the shining First Year students only! In October, Kaiwa Alexandra stood out for how helpful she always was and her eagerness to get to know her fellow Gryffindor students! Anneliese Lee followed swiftly after her in November for being extremely excited about earning points and quickly becoming active in as many areas of Gryffindor as she could! Bay Reilly swept away the award in January as she really began to shine as Gryffindor’s most helpful and cheerful new student through her work in the Spice Squad. Following in her footsteps, Wicket Wilcox took this award in March for her help in creating puzzles and wordsearches for Gryffindor during a new event. Fumei Shirokuro earned this award in May with flying colors, quite literally, as she began to excel as Gryffindor’s most recent graphics extraordinaire. And finally Destri Weasley grabbed this award in June for helping out in many areas around the common room and really bringing them to life!

The Nimbus 2001 Award is given to those Gryffindor students that are always seen helping out other areas of the common room whenever they can! Prof. Jenny Lupin and Julie Garnet flew together to earn the award in November as they began to captain GQT! In January, Bay Reilly and Chadwick Cadet stormed the Spice Squad to bring back the glory of its original form! Eno Thomas earned the award in March for his continual help running events both in Gryffindor and in HOL, while Hailey Potter took home this award for really bringing to life a lot of the activities and events that brought Gryffindor the excitement it now has!

The Phoenix Award goes to most innovative of students in Gryffindor, and whether it is by creating a new event, sparking up new conversation in the common room, or something entirely of its own – these students really shine! In October, Risa Swan brought home this prized award for her work on our September event. Hailey Potter expanded the house awards with her innovative idea and event through a GQT Pep Rally earning her the award in November! In February, Laurie Lovegood and Eno Thomas together received the award for their creation and running of the HOL Valentines event. Bay Reilly received the award in April as she spearheaded the Lion King and Queen Competition. Hedra Longstride and Chadwick Cadet wrote their way into this award as they restarted the roleplaying forum for Gryffindor together in May! And finally, Gryffindor’s own Tom Foster received the award in June for contributing an almost overflowing amount of ideas for the house to try out!

Students who actively participate in classes, HOL, projects, and house papers receive the Consistent Cub award if they are in their Second Year or older. This year the award was monthly given (in order) to Lucy Greyback, Angel Blackstone, Risa Swan, Ikah Swan, Drake Zodiark, Jinxy Jo, Eno Thomas, Jade Packer, and Emma Walker! Congratulations to all of these hard workers!

The Studious Simba award goes out to the First Year students who follow in the paths of the Consistent Cub Awardee's. Each month (consecutively) this award went to Elle Xander, Kaiwa Alexandra, Angel Pevensie, Eia Donne, Ailis Flanagan, Kynthia Near, Saskia Sing, Caleb S Club Juniors, and Hedra Longstride! May the lions of point hoarders past help you continue on your point earning journeys!

The next award, the Curious Kitten, goes to the top First Year students each term. This covers earning points, posting in the common room, and IRC activity. Chadwick Cadet earned this award in the Fall term for all her fabulous point earning and tons of enthusiasm and participation! Fumei Shirokuro followed up with all of her ideas and pro-activity to earn this coveted award in the Spring!

Only two Platinum Quills are awarded each year in Gryffindor and they are given to the top point earner for each term! In the fall, Laurie Lovegood stole this award by a mere handful of points and in the Spring, Hailey Potter dominated the board with her point hoarding ability! Congratulations, girls!

And finally, our Lionheart award. This is bestowed upon the members of other houses whom have been active within the Gryffindor Common Room or have helped out Gryffindor in various ways. In November, Hermionie Miranda won this award for her continued cheer throughout the Gryffindor common room. Hermionie has cheered for Gryffindor in Quidditch matches (not against her own house of course!) and has shown support for many Gryffindor activities, and has certainly proven herself deserving of this award! Maya Winters took the award in January for letting her inner Gryffindor colors shine! Maya is always supportive of the Lions and we definitely think she has a lion-sized heart! Gryffindor's own pet eaglet received this award in March - Allyson Celestra! She has always been incredibly cheerful around the house common room, and could even be considered a chatterbox of our own! Zoki Phantom received the award in May for his substantial help in running the Lion King & Queen event, without his help we may never have seen a crown! And finally, Lisette Westerveldt took home the award in June for all of her magnificent help in establishing the Paw Print and for being incredibly active in the Gryffindor roleplaying forum! Congratulations to all of these out of house members!

Again, CONGRATS to all those names on this list! We really appreciate all the hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm you've put in throughout the year~ :D

  7. JOIN THE GRYFF STAFF!!

With a new school term beginning soon, the Gryffindor staff is working hard to keep the house shiny and organized while planning fun and exciting activities for all the students. We are pleased to announce that once again we are looking to add a few new Junior Prefects to the staff! So if you have creativity, enthusiasm, dedication, and/or a good work ethic, keep reading for more information!

What is a Junior Prefect, and what do they do?

Junior Prefects are Gryffindor House's prefects in training. It is our goal to ease you into the responsibilities associated with being a full-fledged Prefect. As a Junior Prefect, you will be a member of the Gryffindor staff and help contribute ideas to discussions, help plan and organize activities and clubs, be responsible for answering questions or relaying information to and from students, and in general just being an active and enthusiastic member of Gryffindor. You will, of course, have experienced Prefects and older Junior Prefects around to help you learn the ropes. :)

What do I need to do to be a Junior Prefect?

To qualify to send in an application you must satisfy the following conditions:

    1. Must have been active at HOL at least 1 full term (meaning, at least the most recent Spring term).

    2. First Years and Students repeating years are NOT eligible to apply at this time.

    3. Be aware that as a Junior Prefect, you have no prefect rights in HOL. You do not receive those until you become a full prefect.

    4. Must be willing to achieve the following this year (this is part of our current prefect contract):

    - You will receive at minimum 2 quills per term or a total of 4 quills per year.

    - You will earn at least 60 points per month, whether through classwork, HOL projects (library/arts), house newspaper, other house newspaper, etc. However, if you have a class that only awards points at the end of term - notify me (Jenny) so that I don't nag you. That is a perfectly acceptable reason to not be earning that amount. This means that you must earn at least 300 points per term. If you are passing 2 classes, this should not be a problem.

    - You must be an active Gryffindor CR member, check the staff room posts frequently and participate in discussions, and actively fulfill your JP tasks as needed.

    - Be willing and able to run/manage at least 1 activity and/or club per term. You will have guidance on things, of course, but you are required to do the necessary work. We also ask that you are active in at least one (but preferably more) area of Gryffindor, such as GQT, Spice Squad, Gryff Library or Graphics Club.

If you think you can handle this and meet the above qualifications (and yes, we will check) then please answer the following questions to the best of your abilities. When you are done, send the application in a PM to Prof. Jenny Lupin by August 10th, 2012. (But don't wait until the last minute!) They will then be reviewed by Jenny and Missa before a final decision is made.

So aside from that, if you have questions, definitely ask!

QUESTION SECTION (Sorry this is a bit long. We take our staff positions seriously, and thus we want to make sure the students we select are fully qualified.)

    1. Name:

    2. Year:

    3. Why do you want to become a Junior Prefect?

    4. What makes you a good candidate for the Junior Prefect position? (Your Qualities/Traits, Prior Leadership Experience, What You Can Contribute, etc. Anything you can tell us to help aid our decision.)

    5. Do you prefer to work on a team or individually? How do you think that will help you as a staff member?

    6. If a situation arises where you disagree with the general consensus in a discussion, would you post your concerns, knowing that it may be rejected or possibly slow down the project, or would you keep your comments to yourself?

    7. On a similar note, how would you resolve a conflict with another staff member, either in Gryffindor or another house, that you did not get along with?

    8. We would like you to please create a monthly den challenge or house activity and then tell us about it. (For example, but certainly not limited to: What is it about? What is required? Why did you choose it? Etc.)

    9. Dealing with new students is one of the many jobs of a junior prefect. If you received the following message, what response would you give them?

Hi JP!!!! im new 2 griffindor and dont no wut 2 do. I sent a owl to prof. missa but she didn't answer. wut do i do? ohhhh and i want 2 buy a cat so send me beans plz.

    Thnx! -Student

    10. Are there any areas of Gryffindor in particular you would like to help with? Please note what your preference is, but also realize that based on needs you may not get put there.

    11. Being on the Gryffindor staff means added expectations and time commitments. Are you confident you will be able to take on these responsibilities?

    12. Is there anything else that you might like to add? A touch about yourself and your character, a fun story, a word or

    phrase, or nothing?

Again, sorry for the length of this. We really appreciate the time and effort you put into answering this!

  8. With a new school term, it is once again time to bid farewell to some of our beloved staff, but it is also time to say hello to some fantastic new additions to the Gryffindor staff! (YAY, more people to pester! ^__^)

It is with much sadness that I must announce that five members of our staff have stepped down, some due to RL school commitments, new jobs, getting arrested for breeding dragons, etc. Those staff members stepping down are: Joanne Grey, Lucy Greyback, Maria Vianney Gracia, Madeline Bronte, and Sydney Alexandra. All will be greatly missed and hopefully some day they will come back to join us again! WE LOVE YOU! :D (And Jo, your Teapot of D00M will always be here for you!)

BUT! Don't worry! We have FIVE brand new, enthusiastic, and hard working Junior Prefects being added to the staff! (And they don't know it yet because I haven't sent out their official welcome PM's. *smackshead* Surprise? xD) We had a fantastic selection to choose from this term, and Missa and I are excited to have them join us! So, without further ado...

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW JUNIOR PREFECTS:

    Alexzandria Lestrange

    Bay Reilly

    Chadwick Cadet

    Kaiwa Alexandra

    Thomas Lewis

    :yahoo:

In some way or another, this group of new JPs have shown great leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm, so I look forward to working with all of them! :D

(And if you have questions, go pester them. ;))

  9. JOIN THE GRYFF STAFF!

With a new school term beginning, the Gryffindor staff is working hard to keep the house shiny and organized while planning fun and exciting activities for all the students. We're looking for some fresh ideas from new people, so we are looking to add a few Junior Prefects to the staff. These Junior Prefects should be hard working, motivated, and dedicated to making Gryffindor even better.

To qualify to send in an application you must satisfy the following conditions:

    * Must have been at HOL at least 1 full term. (First years who started this fall are eligible to apply!)

    * Going with the previous rule, if you are repeating a year, you must have been active at least 1 term, too.

    * Be aware that as a JP, you have no prefect rights in HOL. You do not receive those until you become a full prefect.

    * Must be willing to achieve the following this year (this is part of our current prefect contract):

    - You will receive at minimum 2 quills per term or a total of 4 quills per year.

    - You must be an active Gryffindor CR member and actively fulfill your JP tasks as needed. As a JP you will be assigned 2-3 specific tasks that we will ask you to run. You will have guidance on things, of course, but you are required to do the necessary work. We also ask that you are active in at least one (but preferably more) area of Gryffindor, such as GQT, Spice Squad, or Graphics Club.

If you think you can handle this and meet the above qualifications (and yes, we will check) then please answer the following questions to the best of your abilities.
