The Sweetness of Pets

I have 2 cats and 3 dogs. If it was up to me, I’d probably have a houseful of cats and dogs.  Whenever I ask my dad for another pet, my dad says we have too many as it is.

My oldest cat is Cally. We went out in the middle of a blizzard to get her when she was a kitten.  As a kitten, Cally used to find whatever she could and put them into shoes or my mom’s slippers then try to get it out.  This was a game she made up on her own. Cally is a sweet cat, but she does not like other animals too much. She has always been very territorial, although she is better now than she used to be.  She spends most of the winter months inside and a lot of the Summer months outside.  A lot of nights, she fights me when it’s time to come in.

My other cat’s name is Hunter.  Hunter is a great cat.  We got him from a convenience store.  I found his owners and found out they were trying to find him a new home. I begged my dad for us to keep him. Hunter is a playful cat, he loves strings and he will sometimes sneak up on Cally and pounce on her. When Hunter wants food or wants outside, he will come up to me, jump on my desk or my lap, and rub his head against me.  If Hunter is outside and wants in, he will go to my dad who is usually working outside. Hunter does not have front claws, but he does not let that stop him.  He loves to climb trees.  He is a real hunter. He can catch mice, squirrels, and has even caught the odd bird.

My oldest dog is Sophie and she is a Shih Tzu.  Sophie can be a little bit temperamental at times.  She does not like strangers (especially little kids) petting her, she is very possessive of her treats and toys. She will even steal my other two dogs’ toys.  We got a beanbag game a few years ago, Sophie fell in love with the beanbags.  Whenever we would throw one, she would run after it and/or catch it.  It was so funny to watch her with these beanbags.  Those beanbags are now Sophie’s beanbags.  Sophie absolutely hates rain. When it’s raining, it’s terrible trying to get her to go outside.  She hates getting dirty.  Sometimes I’ll pick her up and take her out that way.  She also does not like grass, so it can get interesting when I have all 3 dogs out.  She is also extremely attached to me.  She can go without a leash at times and she won’t go anywhere. When I pick her up, she hangs onto my shoulder and does not want me to put her down again.

My male dog is named Chance.  Chance is a Shih Tzu and possibly Poodle mix. Chance reminds me a lot of the Chance in the movie “Homeward Bound”.  He is quite active.  He loves to play, and I love to play with him. He loves to dig and get dirty. If I take him out after it rained, he will try to head straight to the puddles, and he will find the biggest one. Aside from all that, he also loves to cuddle. He is a great boy, but he can be a bit protective.  He does not handle pain well and will bite if he is in any kind of pain.  Chance loves Sophie and Star.

Starlight, or Star, is my youngest dog.  Sophie and Chance are the parents of Star. Star was the runt of the litter and she is the sweetest little dog. She has all the good qualities that her parents have.  She is very friendly, playful, and loves everybody including the cats. She prefers playing with us or other dogs rather than with toys. She will bark if the other two are barking, but most of the time she will bark only when she wants something.  When Star was a puppy, she used to get so car sick.  We go to a campground every summer and my dad would refuse to take her to the campground in his truck.  She eventually grew out of it for the most part.  Car rides still are not her favorite thing, but she no longer gets sick. Star is 5 now and she still looks like a puppy. She still has that puppy face, the puppy fur, and still acts like a puppy. In fact, when I feed the dogs, I often have to handfeed Star to get her started before Sophie and Chance try to steal her food.
