Leonine List – Destinations

By Iverian Gnash

A combination of places I’ve visited not in any particular order.

  • London
A few weeks ago I went to London and it was amazing seeing all the things you see pictures of in real life.
  • Scotland
While on that same trip, we went up to Scotland and saw a lot of cool castles.
  • Wales
Wales was one of my favorite places. We walked around downtown in Cardiff and ate at a pizza shop then had coffee that night with Welsh cakes.
  • New Orleans
My aunt and her family used to live there and we’d go every now and then to see them. One time I flew over with my sister to go to Mardi Gras parades which are a lot of fun 😀
  • Washington D.C.
I’ve been here a few times. I remember when I was little going and it was super cold. Not too long ago we went and took our Christmas photos there.
  • New York City
I’ve been to NYC once and that was on a surprise trip with my aunt. She lived in Connecticut and told my sister and me to get up early and wear comfy shoes, then in the morning with her friend and her friend’s niece we got on a train and went there for the day.
  • Ottawa
I went to Ottawa over Christmas because my sister has an online friend there and they wanted to meet up. It was pretty cold and snowing, so we hung out in a bookstore with a Starbucks and walked around the mall a bit.
  • The Florida Keys
I haven’t been to the keys in a few years now, but we used to go quite frequently as a day trip to swim or go kayaking.
  • Texas
About three years ago we went to Texas with my aunt and her family to see the Alamo. That was the only trip we’ve all gone on together so it was a lot of fun.
  • Washington
I went to Washington state about a year and a half ago because we were road tripping. It was a lot of fun and we stayed at a campsite for a few days.

I have done some research into good places you can grab your friends and go. These are what I hear the best places to go with a group, all around the wizarding world:

  1. Zeniba’s Boiling Cattle
I’ve actually been to this one, it is a quaint little place, there are a lot of plants and even a few cats! Ms Zeniba is a wonderful woman and she makes the loveliest cheesecakes you will ever eat. I recommend if no one in the group has cat allergies.
  2. Windy Corner Wizochoc
Take it from me, the name is no joke! This shop is on a street that is built on a huge cliff, and the view (not to mention the chocolate, mmm) is gorgeous -if you are brave enough walk there!
  3. Beauxbatons Menagerie
Our sister school apparently hosts a very nice menagerie collection, though I have yet to see it. It is rumoured to have 50 different birds, so I would love to see it one day.
  4. Mr Gaunt’s Pelmeni House
This place is close to Durmstrang Institute, and I heard it is never empty, it’s got these nice windows and huge circular tables so a lot of the students go there to do group projects. If you happen to find a seat, grab it quickly, because this man’s pelmeni is to die for!
  5. Durmstrong Coffee & Books
This place is on the school grounds, but it is not as crowded as Mr Gaunt’s for some reason. Their coffee is amazing, and the books are a plus. It’s got this nice lounge-y feel and I heard the carpets come from Turkey!
  6. Archway Gardens
This one is more to the south of UK, and is not as grand as other gardens, but their plants come from different parts of the world and you need to see those colourful flowers in April. It makes for a good place to take artsy group photos.
  7. Bertie Bott’s Bean Bonus Room
Oh, what I would not do to find this rumoured shop. I’ve heard lots of great things about it, it is supposed to be really cheap and you pay once when you enter and afterwards it’s all you can eat! But sadly, it changes places very frequently, and you need to be really lucky to come upon it. There’re upperclassmen in Gryffindor who have visited it, although I’ve also heard that it was not just one of them that went into a food coma after visiting the shop…
  8. Great Baron Viaduct
The Great Baron Viaduct is a good nearby place to grab sandwiches and swimwear and go! It is this nice open place where the water below the bridge runs very clear and shallow so you can do a little picnic and play in the stream. Most fun.
  9. 9-3/4 Boba & Tea
I’ve never tried Boba, but people either really like it or hate it. This place is in the US, and was opened by a Hogwarts graduate who uses their potions practice of years to find new Boba flavours. The flavours rival the Bertie Bott’s selection, from what I heard.
  10. Granny Noht’s No-Melt Ice Cream
Otherwise known as Granny’s Ice Cream Parlour, this little ice cream truck only appears in Hogsmeade when it is absolutely freezing outside. You will ask why would people living in snow would want no-melt ice cream. I will tell you, because most people are insane! And also, the ice cream is delicious and so, so worth it. You can probably play with snow afterwards too, if you have any warmth left in your fingers that is!

Top ten amusement parks or theme parks I plan to visit within the next five years

I love theme parks! I’m not a huge coaster fan, but I enjoy rides that attempt to make you dizzy, and I really love themed rides! Here are the ones I’ve been to before and will be re-visiting, or plan to visit in the very near future:

  1. Universal Studios, Orland, FL
No Harry Potter fan would ever think of missing out on this one, right? I’ve never been, and I cannot wait! They’re planning to add a Universal Monsters park, so I’m holding off my trip for a couple of years.
  2. Disneyland, Anaheim, CA
I love this park! The size is perfect, the attractions are wonderful, and the weather is amazing. My favorite is Haunted Mansion.
  3. Disney World, Orlando, FL
This park is a bit bigger than Disneyland and more crowded, and to be honest I prefer Disneyland, but it’s a great way to spend a Florida vacation, and it’s much closer to where I live.
  4. Dollywood, TN
I love the nice, rural setting, the country feeling, and many of the rides are a blast!
  5. Cedar Point, OH
World-class coasters! This is the park for excitement and thrill rides.
  6. Kings Island, OH
This park is closest to home and I go nearly every year. Their coaster, The Beast, is my favorite, and their Halloween Haunt is spooktacular!
  7. Holiday World, Santa Claus, IN
This one is on my bucket list. The theming alone sounds worth the trip.
  8. Knotts Berry Farm, CA
On my bucket list, I’ve heard this park is gorgeous around Christmas!
  9. Kentucky Kingdom, KY
This one is also on my to-do list. I usually wind up going to other parks, but I definitely want to give this one a try!
  10. Hersheypark, PA
Definitely on my bucket list. How can I not visit a park that’s themed with lost of sweet names, and also has Zoo America?

10 fictional destinations I would love to visit

  • Abhorsen’s House from Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom books:
This is a richly furnished haven with beautiful gardens on an island at the centre of a great river. (There’s even an observatory)
  • The Shire from The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien:
I’m a sucker for beautiful countryside and cosy comfort so Hobbit country is a must.
  • Keep Venture from the Mistborn books by Brandon Sanderson:
Admittedly, I mostly want to go here just to see the magnificent stained glass windows.
  • The Capitol from the Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins:
I detest this place for what it stands for but I would love to spend just one night in the lap of luxury with all those technological advancements and delicious meals.
  • The Villa Limona – the Roman Mysteries books by Caroline Lawrence:
This was a palatial Roman villa on the Italian coast; who wouldn’t want to see how the Romans lived, at least for a little while?
  • The Fairy Market at Wall from Stardust by Neil Gaiman:
Stall upon stall of magical wonders of all descriptions on the border of another world? Sign me up.
  • Corus from the Tortall Universe books by Tamora Pierce:
As fantastical metropoles go, Corus really has it all (temples, markets, famed armourers, lady knights…).
  • Tronjheim from the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini:
This is a city carved out of a mountain with a world renowned star sapphire set into the ceiling of the central hall. I have a weakness for beautiful gems.
  • Pemberley from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen:
A bit of a clichéd choice but I would love to see the famous gardens of this romantic stately home for myself.
  • Hogwarts from The Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling:
    Of course.
