Task 16: First Mate

The captain has been quite busy of late, so he’s delegated one of his responsibilities to you. Each head of a division (eg. IT engineering, medical) writes logs throughout the day, both for record keeping and to keep the higher ups informed of any developments. The logs are also a way to highlight any requests – while they’ll typically get filtered through to the supplies officer, some of the less straightforward requests need to go through the captain as they have the final say. The captain typically goes through these logs individually and marks them as “acknowledged”, “more information requested”, “denied” accordingly.

 

For this task, we’d like you to write 5 logs that might appear in the captain’s queue. Also mark each log as if the first mate has gone through them. The above examples are suggestions – you’re welcome to come up with your own actions.

Comments: The request has been forwarded to the supplies officer for immediate processing. Please ensure that we track usage rates to prevent future shortages.

 

2. Engineering Division - Unauthorized Power Surge in Main Engine

Log: During routine maintenance, a power surge was detected in the main engine, temporarily causing a system glitch. It appears to have resulted from faulty wiring in the control panel. Immediate repairs are underway, but this could indicate a more systemic issue requiring further investigation and requesting approval for a complete diagnostic scan and potential rerouting of power for safety.

Comments: Please provide a more detailed analysis of the cause and any potential risks. If it's critical, we may need to temporarily adjust the ship's power allocation. Awaiting your assessment.

 

3. IT Division - Request for System Upgrade

Log: Our internal network has been experiencing slowdowns, especially with the increasing amount of data being processed. The servers operate near full capacity, and we foresee more strain in the coming months. We propose an upgrade to the server infrastructure, including the installation of additional RAM and storage. Estimate time for installation: 2 weeks.

Status: Denied

Comments: While we understand the importance of system upgrades, given the current budget constraints, this request must be reconsidered after further evaluation. Prioritize immediate performance fixes to stabilize the network for now.

 

4. Security Division - Need for Additional Crew Training

Log: Over the last month, there have been a few security breaches, primarily due to untrained crew members unaware of emergency protocols. We want to propose a mandatory security training course for all non-security personnel. This will help improve safety and efficiency in handling critical incidents. Please approve the necessary resources.

Status: Acknowledged

Comments: This training is a priority, especially for new crew members. I will initiate coordination with the training department to schedule sessions. Ensure the security department prepares adequate materials.

 

5. Environmental Division - Disruption in Waste Processing System

Log: A malfunction in the waste processing system has caused a temporary halt in recycling operations. This could lead to waste disposal delays and potential environmental hazards if not addressed quickly. The technician has identified the issue as a blockage in the filtration system, but the part required for repair is not in stock. We request approval to requisition the part from another ship.

Status: More Information Requested

Comments: Please provide an estimated timeline for when the part could be procured and the repair completed. If the environmental hazard risks are high, we may need to find an alternative solution while awaiting the part.
