Point Earning Opportunities (spring term 2020)

Recommended Posts

The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths.

In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back!

The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul.

Class sign-up opened on the 1st of February 2020 and will remain open until May 20th so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself)

The next are the creative projects offered each month by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, visit the 'Departments' tab on the main website. Don't be shy: your submissions are anonymous during the rating period. You can get started by going to your profile and telling us 'How I Got Into Harry Potter' in the designated section - that will earn you a cool 10 points!

Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things.

All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too).  The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with.

Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

Welcome to the spring term!

Gryffindor is doing amazingly in the cup standings this year! Not only could we end our years long curse of always coming 4th but we might even stand a chance of doing better than that. But for either of those things to hhappen, we need every single active Gryffindor student to do their part and help us earn those points. However much you can contribute, it all counts. So, in that spirit, here are the point earning opportunities currently on offer around the castle.

The Gryffindor Paw Print is back and looking for your articles, graphics, opinions and many other things. The theme this time is 'improvement' so we're looking for articles about life hacks that have improved your life, any craft/upcycling/ DIY projects you might have done (or just  admire) and inspirational advice. We're always happy to accept things that fall outside the theme too. Be sure to check out Prose and Cons for something a little more creative. You can earn 90 points in all across submissions and Prose and Cons so be sure to stop by the Quivering Quill Forum for details!

Deadline: February 26th

The Art and Library Departments are ready to receive your submissions on 4 fresh new projects. If you're feeling artistic, then Art has you covered with a trip to a magical zoo and an exploration of beloved objects. The Library is getting motivational with inspirational speeches and wondering what might happen if a Harry Potter character was able to change one decision they'd made. You can earn 20 points in each Department simply by submitting to both projects with an additional 20 each up for grabs.

Deadline: 29 February

Down in the Dungeons, The Serpentimes is also open for submissions! Sharpen your mind and hone your concentration for this 'focus' themed issue. Remember to check out Exclusives for a fun and straightforward extra 40 points as well. That's another 90 points in total  for the earning!

Deadline: 15th March

Term is certainly flying by and we're seeing a lot of new members around the castle (welcome!)

What with one thing and another, a lot of people are probably in search of fun things to do (either to pass the time or to help them relax) and we certainly have those in abundance. First of all, how are you getting on with your classes? Remember, if you have some extra time on your hands it's never a bad idea to do a few assignments in advance.

There's still just time to take part in the department projects for this month. The Library are writing manuals to introduce wizards to muggle concepts and also letting untraditional narrators tell their stories. In the art department, the focus is on food and also on the treasures you'd lock away in your very own Gringotts vault. There are points up for grabs so head over there pronto.

Deadline: 31st March

Equally pressing is the call for submissions from Ravenclaws Alte Sententiam. You could try your hand at writing a drabble or taking a photo (this issues theme is 'colour') or fill in some squares on your very own creative writing bingo card. Details of both of these can be found in The Great Hall (on the main HOL forum); if you'd like to write an article, submit a graphic or baffle people with a puzzle, then send a message to Gail Allen, the editor. There are 90 points up for grabs in total.

Deadline: March 31st

You have a bit longer to write for our own house newspaper, the Paw Print. We'll be taking your submissions on destinations (that theme didn't feel quite so much like wishful thinking when we picked it) and would love to feature whatever you can come up with, whether it's a bucket list of places you want to visit, a review of somewhere that you love or something quite different. We also have Prose and Cons, our light-hearted creative section bursting with fun prompts. There's another 90 points available so head over to the Quivering Quill forum right now to let us know what you'd like to contribute.

Deadline: 27th April.

There are other things to do around the castle that won't earn you house points but are still an excellent use of time. Here on the CR, there's still time to earn yourself some rubies in this month's piratical quest and we have something very adventurous planned for April that you will not want to miss. Check out the clubs on the main HOL forum:Book Club and Hollers have so much for you to do, whether you're a reader, a writer or a puzzler. All the other houses also welcome you to come have fun with them so next time you take a stroll around the castle, make sure you pay a visit to the corridor down by the kitchens, the dungeons and Ravenclaw tower to see what's occurring.

Say safe, happy and productive, lions and remember that, whatever is going on in the world, Hogwarts will always be here to welcome you home.

A new month, a new lot of chances to fill up that Gryffindor hourglass. We're still holding strong in third place and let me tell you, that is sensational for us. We  need to keep working hard to make this a historical year for Gryffindor though so keep it up, everyone!

The Departments have new projects on offer. The Art Dept is holding its very own 'Weighing of the Wands' and also encouraging you to play some games. In the Library, it's all very mysterious as they're speculating about the truth behind some unanswered wizarding questions and delving into the dreams of Harry Potter characters. Each project has a maximum of 20 points up for grabs so head over their ASAP.

Deadline: april 30th

As I mentioned above, our beloved Paw Print is awaiting your submissions. Head to the Quivering Quill and help us make this the best issue yet. Even if you don't consider yourself much of a writer, there are other ways you can fill the pages so why not give it a try? There are 90 points up for grabs!

Deadline: April 27th

Looking far into the future now (it never hurts to be prepared), the SerpenTimes is accepting submissions for its final issue of the year in June. Once you've finished all of April's offerings, why not head over to Slytherin and see what's what? Just look out for Basil, the friendly neighbourhood basilisk.

Deadline: June 15th

That's all for this month but I've heard rumours that there may be something exciting happening over on the main forum in a few weeks so keep your ear to the ground for more on that.

Let's go, Gryffindor, let's go!

May is upon us! That means we're heading towards the end of term as fast as one of those accursed Gringotts carts. It also means there's plenty of points opportunities for the taking.

'Use the force...' to get yourself over to the main HOL forum where you have the chance to train as a Jedi Knight. With weeks of cosmic fun to be had and 80 points up for grabs, silly to miss it you would be.

Deadline: 31st May

The departments have projects up and running. You can snaz up your school trunk and reflect on what you've accumulated this year in the Art Department while the Library is full of mysterious whispers as they tackle secrets and small talk. There's a maximum of 40 points available in each department so go and try your hand. June's projects will also be released towards the end of this month (as they finish earlier next month due to the end of term) so keep a look out for those.

Deadline for May's Projects: 31st May

Alte Sententiam is looking for astronomically awesome articles, stories, graphics and puzzles for its final issue of the year (the theme for the DBC is: 'Sun and Stars'). Check out the Great Hall on the HOL forum for details about the creative writing and photography opportunities or drop Gail Allen a message if you'd like to write an article or provide a puzzle. There are 90 points available in all.

Deadline: 31st May

SerpenTimes has dreamed up a theme for their final issue of the term as well. Let your powers of invention run wild as they're focusing on all things to do with imagination. There are another 90 points for the earning here so be sure to head over to the Dungeons to find out more.

Deadline: June 15th

I hope the term is treating you well. Let's finish it in style! (And with plenty of points)

May is fast getting away from us! Let's make the most of it and rake in those points.

How is your homework going? Make sure you know for sure when your remaining assignments are due; most classes have a final due date of June 15th but this can vary. Check and check again so you know when you need to hand things in. If you're a brand new student who joined after class signups closed, remember that you can still politely message professors asking if they'll allow you to join their class.

Around the castle, you still have the chance to immerse yourself in the world of Star Wars with Jedi Apprentice training over on the forum. Create yourself an alien identity, build a spaceship and learn how to channel the force, all while earning points.

Deadline: 31st May

As well as the Art and Library projects I told you about last time (open until the 31st of May), new ones for June have also landed. These wrap up a lot earlier than usual on the 14th of June so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get involved. The art department are helping out the house elves with lost property while the library are getting sentimental by inviting everyone to imagine their final day at Hogwarts as a 7th year.

Deadlines: the 31st of May and the 14th of June

The Alte and SerpenTimes are still looking for contributions to their final issues of the year (more details in the reply above this one) and so is our very own Paw Print. With a theme of 'something sweet', we're looking for articles, recipes and anything else you can think of to delight our sweet  teeth (tooths?). It's also perfectly fine to submit something that doesn't fit the theme in any way so whatever you want to write, come see if we can find a home for it. Remember to check out Prose and Cons for some creative fun,  as well as the chance to earn an additional 40 points. Head over to the Quivering Quill for more details!

Alte Deadline: May 31st

SerpenTimes Deadline: June 15th

Paw Print Deadline: June 21st

Let's go, Gryffindor, let's go!
