Point Earning Opportunities (Autumn Term 2019/20)

Recommended Posts

The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths.

In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back!

The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul.

Class sign-up will open September 1st 2019 and will remain open until December 20th so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself)

The next are the creative projects offered each month by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, visit the 'Departments' tab on the main website. Don't be shy: your submissions are anonymous during the rating period. You can get started by going to your profile and telling us 'How I Got Into Harry Potter' in the designated section - that will earn you a cool 10 points!

Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things.

All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too).  The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with.

Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

Oh, what’s this? Points for the earning even before the term starts?

Yes! If you head on down to the Departments, you still have a few days left to take part in the various summer projects. The Art Department want to see what you got up to during your holidays in a montage extravaganza. The Library is investigating some mysteriously misdirected postcards and speculating on what would happen if time saving devices went rogue. There’s a maximum of 60 points up for grabs and you’re guaranteed half just for taking part.

Deadline: 31st August

Also, the SerpenTimes are ahead of the game and are already accepting submissions for their first issue of the school year. The theme is discovery so go and see what you can discover in the way of writing materials and venture down to the Dungeons for more information.

Deadline: 15th October

The start of term means plenty of new classes, new faces and new opportunities to add to Gryffindor’s hourglass!

First things first, have you picked your classes yet? They really are the best way to earn points and also the only way you’re going to get quills to advance a year next summer. Make sure you know when your homework is due for everything as deadlines can vary!

Secondly, you should hot foot it over to the HOL Forum for the HOL Welcome fair.  Not only are there posts from all the houses telling you what extracurricular fun they have on offer but you can earn points too! From now until the 30th of September, you can complete puzzles, get creative and chat to fellow students; if you do it all, you’ll earn 60 house points.

Deadline: 30th September

The Departments also have new projects on offer for the start of term. In the Library, the Hogwarts Welcome Feast isn’t quite going to plan and your very survival is at stake (those aren’t necessarily part of the same story but hey, they could be). The Art department is being very practical and getting you set for your new classes with swish school supplies and tempting textbooks.

Deadline: 30th September

By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. In addition to the SerpenTimes issue I mentioned above, the Alte Sententiam (Ravenclaw’s Paper) is open for business! If you have an idea for an informative article, a review or even a puzzle, drop Gail Allen a message and run it by her. You can also head over to The Great Hall on the HOL Forum to check out the details of the Drabble Babble feature: they’re asking for spooky stories of exactly 100 words, as well as your eerie photography. While you’re there, you should also have a look at the Bingo Board of fun writing prompts that can earn you not only points but an award at year’s end.

Deadline: 30th September

Phew! I think I got it all. Now it’s your turn: go out there and do the house proud! Let’s go, Gryffindor, let’s go!

We’re around half way through the term now and putting in a strong points performance. Keep it up, Gryffies! To help you do that, here are the latest lovely lot of extra point earning opportunities.

First up, projects! Both Art and Library have them available. In the Library, there’s the chance to browse for magical new books in the literary section of the Daily Prophet or earn yourself a wish or 2 or 3. Art are winding down their prompts on enticing invitations and Hogwarts resident ghosts (so get over their fast to show Sir Nick some love) but I’m sure there will be new projects to follow as soon as those close.

Art Deadline: 9th November

Library Deadline: 30th November

Stop the presses! Not 1 but 3 House newspapers are after your articles and other such headline grabbing contributions (I’ll list them in order of their deadlines). You can earn a maximum of 90 points from each paper: that’s a total of 270!

Alte (Ravenclaw’s esteemed publication) is warming the castle with a sense of Community this cold and blustery season. You’ll find the community spirit in their Drabble Babble contest where there are points to be earned through welcomingly short stories and photography. Contact Gail Allen with your ideas for articles, reviews and everything in between: If you have articles of a scientific nature, here would be the ideal home for them (though of course, the eagles are happy to receive anything you’d like to write, factual or not). Lastly, remember to check out Creative Writing Bingo if you’re someone of an author-ly disposition!

Deadline: 30th November

Next up is our very own Paw Print, returning after a short hiatus. We’re inviting everyone to cuddle up by the fireplace in The Den with their quills and notebooks as we write on the subject of Cosy (and anything non-cosy you have the urge to write too). We want to while away those long winter nights with your articles, opinions, recipes, reviews, guides, poems and much much more, so get sending them in! We also have 4 fun challenges for you in the shape of Prose and Cons. Please visit the Quivering Quill forum to check those out and tell the editors all about your ideas over a mug of hot chocolate.

Deadline: 22nd December

Lastly, the end of 1 year and the beginning of another is an excellent time to ponder. The folks down in the Dungeons obviously agree as the theme for this issue of SerpenTimes is just that, ‘reflection’. So, look back, forward or in a mirror for inspiration and head over to the SerpenTimes forum to let them know what you’d like to reflect upon in your submissions this time. Remember to check out Exclusives too for some photographic and wordsmithing fun, as well as the chance to hand out awards to your fellow HOLers.

Deadline: 15th January

It’s December and the castle is as busy as ever! Mind those everlasting icicles. As well as the Gryffindor and Slytherin newspapers being open for submissions (see the reply above this one for details), there are several more point earning opportunities to cuddle up in front of the Common Room fire with.

The Library has 2 fresh projects! This time you’re invited to write stories of wild weather and delicious dishes. There’s a maximum of 30 points up for grabs so head on over there quick.

Deadline: 31st December

Who doesn’t love presents? This year, the return of the Secret Elf Present Exchange over on the main forum gives you the chance to give and get gifts this December. Whether you’re after a new signature or just want to give someone the warm and fuzzies, this activity is a perfect way to pass the winter. There are also 30 points on offer for being a good elf so really, this is a win win win situation. Get in there fast with your wish list though if you want to sign up.

Deadline for signups: 9th December

Deadline to deliver gifts: 31st December

There are also heart-warming wintery activities in all the Common Rooms this month. While they won’t earn you house points, you should still be sure to stop by the Sett for a Hogwartian Christmas, the Dungeons for the Silver Snake Gift Exchange and I believe Ravenclaw are looking for assistance in dealing with some very sinister snowmen. Of course, you could just stay right here and stuff yourself with sweet treats in our Chocolate Factory activity, that’s also an excellent idea.

Whatever and however you’re celebrating, happy holidays, lions!

We're racing towards the end of term and I can't remember when the house cup race was last this  exciting. Gryffindor is doing absolutely spectacularly but we need to keep it up! Let's keep hard on the heels of those eagles and snakes. (What do you mean snakes don't have heels? Shhh)

Are you sure you know when your homework deadlines are? While most classes have a final deadline of the 15th of January, some are due earlier. Make sure you check and know what you need to turn in when. Even if you've fallen behind with a class and don't think you can pass it, submit work anyway. You'll still earn some points and every point counts!

There  are also points up for grabs in the Library this month. With projects delving into the history of the Hogwarts founders and the ripple effect of new years resolutions, I'm sure you can find a story to tell.

Deadline: 31st January

Let's go, Gryffindor, let's go!
