Design Your Quester

Recommended Posts

This is the place where you can introduce us to your adventurer! While you can certainly complete the quests ‘as yourself’, you can also create a bold hero to do the legwork for you.

For 25 rubies, introduce us to your hero in 100 words: their backstory, strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. For another 25, you can draw or describe their physical appearance and the fashionable gear they wear for questing. If you use words to describe them, make it at least 100 long. Post your profiles, graphics and descriptions below.

Things to keep in mind:

There is no deadline or end date

Your hero can be an idealised or alternate version of your HOL self or an entirely fictional person

You can create more than one hero, though you’ll only receive rubies for the first

You aren’t bound to use your hero for each quest (you can complete them as yourself or as other characters you haven’t profiled)

You can draw on existing characters but you're receiving beans for creativity and originality for this part of the activity so please make sure your character is 'your own'. If you'd like to complete individual quests in a 'fan-fic' style with an existing character, you can (providing you credit their creator in your submission for that quest)

Your character can be a witch, wizard or muggle from any time period

Your character can have special abilities but please, no invincible, undefeatable paragons. I won’t award you full rubies for a task if you’ve made life too easy for yourself.

At least one of my heroes to act in this quest is a guy named Jack. Captain Jack, if you will!

Now, WHICH Captain Jack it is, that's sort of up to you?  Handsome, devil-may-care, with a smile for dangers and an ability to somehow get himself out of dangerous situations (and no one expected it ...).  He's somehow found out how not to die (BUT NOT LIKE MOLDY VOLDY), or at least, hasn't died in spite of being killed. (Maybe killed a few times...)

Abilities? Hmmm. Good with weapons, a certain amount of wit, but also he has the ability to just keep going. No matter what.

Usually he's found in clothing which suits the time and place, but almost always that garb will include a pair of boots and oftentimes some sort of head gear like a hat. He's partial to coats ... especially if they have a bit of a flair to them when he walks.

Magical powers you ask? None that he admits to. As for more specific description of my bold hero doing the legwork. Let's start with legs. Yes, nice legs. Muscular legs. Legs that can do a lot of running! Trim torso and shoulders which might (by some) be called broad, and others might say who care, they suit him! Hair is a nice dark-ish colour. None of this blond stuff - nope! Sometimes clean-shaven, sometimes not. (Depends on where he is, after all.)

So, which 'Captain Jack' do you think he is?  :D

My quester has my name, Iverian Gnash, although she does not share all of my personality traits. Iverian's backstory is pretty straight-forward. She comes from a small family which consists of her mother and two siblings. She goes questing to get away from the day-to-day bores of life. Her strengths include running, jumping, critical thinking, and friendliness to others, and her weaknesses include climbing, fear of heights, controlling her temper at times, and forgiving and forgetting things in her past. Iverian likes snakes, some people, her best friend, and food :P. She dislikes some people, bugs, and arguing over trivial matters.

Iverian wears stretchy leggings with a short skirt over top for ease at getting around. She wears a variety of tank tops and large t-shirts for comfort and coolness. Iverian wears the same pair of black running shoes that are very light and comfortable and can stick to things when she needs to climb something, which she isn't very good at. She has her hair cut a few inches above her shoulders which makes it very easy to take care of and to stick back in a ponytail when needed. She never wears jeans because she can't run and move very easily in them. Iverian always carries a small pocket knife with her which she finds very useful and a long piece of rope for attaching things.

Dario Brighton is a Hogwarts professor with a strong proclivity for nitid things. He can mostly be found roaming around the halls of the castle in search of things to get him distracted. During evening hours, he is most likely in his office on the sixth floor plotting castle blueprints for possible renovation schemes. Prof. Brighton claims the classroom just by the Transfiguration Courtyard. The annoyance he is currently facing is the distance between what he thinks is the best office in the castle and his classroom, which is making him petition the school board to approve his plans for more hidden passageways and an internal floo-network.

His field of expertise is Transfiguration, which he teaches during the morning hours. His students would probably define him as a bit demanding and on the stricter side, as he puts up high expectations from day one. Despite the sternness, he pours a lot of time and patience into his classes and is very protective of his students. He specialises in conjuration and vanishment. Though he also likes to dabble in duelling, especially dealing with defensive enchantments. He has never found his talents to involve potion-making, divination or herbology as he likes to face magic hands-on.

Because of his mastery of defensive enchantments, he was appointed Keeper of Grounds and Keys. He can be heard from a mile's distance walking across the hallways dangling a heavy key set in his left hand.

It is likely you've already heard of the formal dinner parties he hosts on Fridays, displaying the newest and finest sets of china he's managed to collect, making way too many analogies trying to explain the tiniest mechanics of Transfiguration and talking about his newest knitting project to his guests.

Family and Personal History: Breanna Trevelyan is a successful lawyer, who specializes in criminal law. She's a hard worker, since she came from a rather poor background, and had to work three jobs to get herself through university. She met her husband in a cafe where she worked at. George comes from a richer background and according to him, it was love at first sight (not so much for Breanna). He invited her for coffee and a beautiful relationship blossomed that day, much to the chagrin of George's parents, who wished for their son to become a renowned surgeon and marry a nice girl they picked for him. Only half of their wish came true.

Maxim was born at home in Cardiff, Wales. By that time, George fulfilled his wish to become a surgeon and Brenna was employed by a rather big law firm. Then, George packed up his family and left for England after he was offered a job at Oxford. Once at the great university Mr. Trevelyan had begun his job as a professor. While at home, Maxim was being taught in etiquette by his mother and all other subjects that Breanna thought her son should know.

When Maxim turned 11 years old, he received an odd letter. It was an acceptance letter to Hogwarts. His parents while taken by surprise, but embraced Maxim's new found ability with great gusto. George, especially, found his son's 'power' to be the coolest thing he'd ever seen. He'd even thought of Hogwarts as if his son was going to a superhero academy.

Maxim has a very good heart. It is actually often that he does what his heart tells him to do, than what his brain says. It may be dangerous at times and foolish, but he tends to listen more to his heart. He's very caring and loving towards all living creatures and plants, though he usually has some clashes with people because of his clumsiness.

Another Maxim's more pronounced characteristic is that he is very witty. He comes with small smart comments whenever he feels like it, and sometimes they tend to bring him in bad situations with older students or professors. That part of him is not very well-mannered. He's also a talker. He talks a lot and actually blabs about everything – even if he is in the company of a person, he does not like. The only time when he is quiet is when he is nervous, scared or sad. It rarely happens however, since Maxim is usually in a good mood. You can really call the boy naive. He is not only that, he is idealistic, and he believes that every problem in the world can be solved with love and friendship.

Like most boys Maxim is very messy. His room is floating with books, dirty socks and clothes. He does not like to clean up and always delays this gruesome task until his mother tells him to do it with one of his death glares.

His friends and family will always be a weakness for Maxim. He does everything he can to keep them safe and happy. He would willingly to risk his life for them if the situation called for it. To all of his closest friends, and people he is fond of, Maxim is fiercely protective. He has a code of conduct for himself. He's respectful of most people, especially women. He has a keen eye for details, he has a gift for remembering a person's normal gait, and notices when it's off. He's also very observant when he chooses to be. He has an ability to keep calm in situations that would have most other people hyperventilating. He does indeed feel fear in these situations, but he normally chooses to set that fear aside in such situations.

Maxim is a little small for his age, but that doesn't stop him at his endeavors. He sports a slight tan, but most prominent are his freckles that adorn his face. He has blue eyes and blond, short and slightly curly hair. His build is athletic, mostly due to running around, playing all sorts of sports with his mates.

When Maxim is off having adventures, he is dressed in comfortable, but functional clothing. The exact pieces depend on what he is doing, but mostly consist of think undergarments and socks, and then cotton short and long sleeved shirts and pants. He also carries extra pieces of clothing in his backpack, just in case he ever gets lost (and he does, sometimes). Maxim also never sets out without a survival kit that carries basic items such as first aid kit, matches and some other Muggle items.

Physical Appearance:

Diana Pierderi has voluminous black hair that reaches the middle of her back. She also has vibrant green eyes set in a heart-shaped face and full lips. She has a light tan that makes her seem to be of either Hispanic or East European roots, which is slightly correct, because, although she was born in London, her father was from Russia and her mother from Peru. Diana has high cheekbones that hint at nobility, and she carries herself with the grace and poise of a Princess born and raised. She is of average height, if on the shorter side, with a height of 5'7 inches, with moderate amounts of curves that make up for what she lacks in height.

Personality:

Diana often holds her personal feelings close and rarely allows anyone to get close to her. She is deeply loyal, which is why she doesn't want to let anyone in. She doesn't want to risk getting hurt any more than she's already been hurt. But once that harsh exterior has been cracked, she will do anything for her friends. She has a slightly sarcastic nature that tends amp up whenever she's tired or hungry. She is also brutally honest. She will tell the truth, no matter the consequences. The only thing that hinders that is her loyalty to her friends. That being said, she also has the tendency to lash out when she's feeling pressured. She also enjoys pulling the odd prank on people and it may be noted that mischief is almost always spotted in her eyes.

Strengths:

Diana has always been rather good at defending herself, whether verbally or physically.

Diana has no problem with putting another person in their place when they've obviously (I mean, in a very obvious way) wronged her.

Weaknesses:

Her Father, though she swears that she hates him, is the one person she has left in her family.

Her few friends, though fully able to protect themselves, are the people she would guard with her life.

Likes:

Honesty

Animals

Dislikes:

Diana has no time for those who fake their way through things. She's the type to get as much as she can in one day, at one time.

Liars

Background:

Hey!

My name is Diana Pierderi, which, I've been told, is Russian for "Sorrow." Whatever reason my mother had for giving me a surname with such negative connotations, I will never know. Maybe it was my father's last name. No, I'm lying. It's definitely my father's last name. But that's life, isn't it? The inability to fully comprehend that which you were not around to hear or see or know.

That got...Anyway, I'm seventeen years old, and I have absolutely no knowledge of magic. Well...almost none.

See, when I was six years old, I met my father. I hadn't had the slightest clue who he was or where he'd been for the first six years of my life, and you could say I was slightly hostile toward him in the beginning. A hostility that's faded only slightly. Apparently, I got my looks from him, both the green eyes that always seem to see far too much for their own good, and the voluminous black hair that falls in waves to just below my shoulders, even the light tan of my skin. But I'd give anything to just have something that belonged to my mother.

Anyhow, I figured that meeting my father for the first time would be- for lack of a better word- magical. And, in a way, it was. Just...not in the way I'd been expecting.

My father...I've never actually had to explain this to anyone before, because, honestly, who would believe a hyperactive child with a bit of-alright- a very active imagination? No one in their right mind.

But I feel like this time will be different. Maybe this time someone will actually listen. My father was a wizard. You know, one of the wand-waving, broom-riding, save the world type wizards. Only, he didn't do much saving. He was apparently one of the best of his time. Apparently.

But since meeting him, I've begun to notice things. Things like the way the teapot steams when there is no fire underneath it. That only happens when I'm really angry. And I've ever only gotten really angry once. I swear it.

One of the most memorable moments I have stored in my mind, though, was when I shattered my mirror. Which sounds far more violent than it was. I remember it all so clearly. I'd be scared, whether from the wind that tore ferociously at the trees outside, the rain that pattered endlessly on the roof of the house, or the boom of the thunder outside my window, I have no idea. Maybe it was a combination of all three. But after one particularly loud boom, I had jerked upright in bed, screaming as my mirror turned into a dozen little trinkets on the floor. That was the one time I fully believed my father was telling the truth.

And I do believe that's all. It should be. For now.

Hobbies:

Diana enjoys all the time she has with animals, magical and non-magical alike. She discovered her love for animals when she stumbled across a wounded kitten and took it in. The kitten healed and is now a sleek beauty with the name of Nyx.

Diana may also enjoy writing, to the degree that it's nearly impossible for her to not be constantly thinking about new things to write. She started writing as an outlet, to let go of emotions that she felt were too toxic to contain.

Boggart (Fear):

Diana's boggart would probably take on the form of pure darkness. More specifically, herself alone in pure darkness, with no friends, no help, nobody. Just emptiness. She feels as though the more people she pushes away, the closer she gets to living her fear. This is no ordinary childhood fear. She fears being alone in darkness because, as a child, she had to constantly force her emotions down, away from the limelight, and the emptiness of darkness exposes the reality that the more she's tried to push her emotions away, the more empty she becomes. And the less friends she has.

Mirror of Erised:

Diana would look into the mirror and see herself in her mother's arms. It's a wistful dream, one she's been longing for since her mother passed away when she was six years old. Her mother's untimely death left Diana with a pit in her stomach and a father she can't seem to connect with. So, it's logical that she'd want to be able to spend time with her mother again.

Isa’s father is a British pure-blood Squib and Isa’s mother is a Japanese half-blood, making Isa a Japanese-British half-blood also. Growing up, her household was very odd as her father worked in the muggle world in advertising as a graphic designer and her mother worked for the Ministry of Magic as a Hit Witch.

Because her mother was away from home a lot of the time due to her job, Isa assimilated into Muggle culture for much of her adolescence, going to muggle schools and having muggle friends. She even began to resent magic after a while, wishing that it wasn’t real so that her mother could stay at home more often and that her father— who had become an outcast from his pure-blood extremist family and magical childhood friends— might still have had these relationships intact if not for magic. This made Isa suppress her magical abilities, not wanting to have anything to do with the magical world and preferring to stay in the muggle one as much as she could.

She still exhibited a sign of magic growing up, much like every other witch or wizard, though Isa only exhibited these signs once. Growing up, she had suppressed the signs of magic so well that people around her believed that she had taken after her father and been a squib. However, when she was ten years old, three years past the normal period of wizard magic-using, she had her first occurrence. Her mom had been on a business trip and her dad hadn’t come home from work yet, leaving a muggle nanny in charge of Isa until he got home. A muggle man broke into Isa’s family home while she and the nanny were playing upstairs. The nanny shushed Isa and they both hid in the closet. After a while, the burglar, not knowing that people were inside the house, stomped upstairs and into the playroom the two were in. Isa, who could see through the cracks between the closet doors, saw the man reach toward the handle in an attempt to open the door and screamed. The scream inexplicably shook the floor and caused the closet to explode outward. Some of the wood planks flew toward the man, hitting him on his head and knocking him unconscious. The nanny ran from the house in fear away from Isa, leaving her alone with the unconscious burglar. The matter was settled after Isa’s father came home and called the police, though they were confused at exactly how he had been knocked out. Isa’s father quickly made up a story about how the wood had likely overheated, causing the pressure inside the cabinet to change and suddenly explode outward. The police still thought it odd but closed the case quickly as the burglar confessed to breaking in and the nanny was cited as a witness.

After this incident, Isa’s mother was also called back from her business trip and she speculated that Isa had a three-year pent-up of magic that had released in that moment, accounting for the abnormal magnitude and lateness of her magic. Isa soon after went back to doing her best to ignore her magic and vowed to never use it, seeing how catastrophic it could be.

However, everything changed on her eleventh birthday when she received a Hogwarts letter. For as long as she could remember, Isa had dreaded this moment, though she knew it would arrive some day. She didn’t want her father— whom his whole family had abandoned because of his magical inabilities— to loose another person or feel guilt for making her stay and decided to pretend as if the letter had never come and threw it in the trash. The day after she had done so, a second letter appeared in her mail and after disposing of it, a third and then a fourth, fifth, and sixth popped up the morning after she would throw them out. Eventually, she was throwing out so much mail that it became evident to her father that something was suspicious. Peaking through her garbage, he found that all of the letters were addressed in from Hogwarts. Knowing that his daughter was only throwing these away because she didn’t want to hurt him, Isa’s father took one of the letters from her trash and pretended to find mail on the doorstep and acted as though he was rejoiced at the prospect of his daughter learning magic. Isa, none the wiser, believed her dad was being truthful and the two finally opened the Hogwarts letter together.

Though, throughout early life, Isa’s mom had taken her to magical places such as Diagon Alley, Isa wasn’t very interested in magic until her eleventh birthday, when she got her Hogwarts acceptance letter. When she realized that being unable to ignore her magical abilities and attempting to fit into the muggle world was dangerous, she decided to go to Hogwarts in order so that she wouldn’t have to live life fearing for another outburst. In order to prepare herself for Hogwarts and entering into the wizarding world, Isa trying to find out everything about it; she started by reading magical books and the Daily prophet but her enthrallment soon led her to visit Diagon Alley by herself— to the point where she was making unlikely friends with Gringotts goblins and the owner of Gamble and Japes began secretly  giving her Filibuster fireworks and luminous balloons on the side— and  Isa even visited the Ministry of Magic with her mom on “bring your child to work” day, smiling when her mom’s co-workers told her that she had the aptitude and was growing up to have the make of a great Hit Witch or Auror. (I’m so sorry to anyone who tried to follow that 118 word sentence)

This trip to the Ministry led Isa to take a strange liking to Defense Against the Dark Arts and, throughout her time before going to Hogwarts, she would spend hours slowly reading through books focused on defensive and offensive incantations and when she got her wand, she would wave it around and pretend that she was casting complex spells.

Her wand, by the way, is a 13 inch Sycamore wood wand with a Curupia hair core, quite springy. The springy nature and length of her wand are due to Isa’s high-energy, bouncy, and full-of-life personality. She loves being a social butterfly and is full of liveliness. The Sycamore wood is, similarity, thought to be particularly matching for Isa as she loves looking for adventure and, sometimes slightly recklessly, stumbles into dramatic situations that make her use her wit. The wand’s Curupia hair core, a notoriously unstable and unpredictable wand, gifted to talented and similarly unpredictable wizards, also perfectly matches Isa’s recklessness and simultaneously her drive for excellent wizardmanship.

Isa has a few general likes and dislikes. Throughout her days before Hogwarts, she had joined a local field hockey league and much of her free time was taken up by practice and hanging out with her teammates. It was one among the only things she missed dearly when she started Hogwarts and, even when she started school, she’d practice by herself in remote areas of the grounds for hours at a time.

Isa also likes anything artistic. As mentioned earlier, her dad was a graphic designer and he taught her how to sketch. Though a long and hard process, she developed her skills and likes making art. She even branched off into other art-adjacent areas such as knitting, macrame, and embroidery, though she’s sometimes embarrassed to admit that she spends time doing such “grandmotherly” things despite no one really caring either way.

Isa is also has an affliction with lizards, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans (she loves the thrill of unpredictability!), and Eunice Murray, ex-player for the Montrose Magpies.

In addition to having a Horned owl named Albert, she has three lizards (Pirn, Beano, and Snow) and used to have a fourth (named Cat; she thought it ironic to name a lizard by a predator name and lived to regret the name) that was eaten by Albert when she first bought him.

On the other hand, Isa dislikes woodwork, walnuts, Erklings, and the dark.

She failed her woodworking class while enrolled in muggle middle school and wouldn’t, for the life of her, be able to nail together two pieces of wood.

Isa simply dislikes walnuts because she thinks they taste horrible (unless they are in cake, then they’re okay).

Isa not only hates Erklings, but is terrified of them. When she was young, her mother read to her a picture book in which an Erkling terrorized a medieval village by eating the citizen’s children by night. This picture book scarred her for life and made her dread both the creatures and the dark. House elves, which are thought to be related to Erklings also freak Isa out, despite most of them being caring and wonderful creatures. Even when Isa grew up, she couldn’t sleep without a nightlight, fearing that she would bump into some dark and fearsome creature on a nighttime stroll to the bathroom if she couldn’t see.

Isa is, characteristically, both emotionally sensitive and crude at the same time. She likes to make mildly offensive jabs at her friends but usually knows when a joke has gone too far (though she sometimes gets a bit carried away). When it comes to people who are struggling, though, Isa knows how to calm down and listen to them, though she’s not the best with giving advice. Because she knows of her own tendencies to act recklessly and without much thought, she becomes overly cautious when someone else could be put in danger for her actions. This occasionally makes Isa a hard person to collaborate or form deep, meaningful friendships with because she is always worrying about the negative impact she might have on other people’s lives. Her caution also tends to make Isa close up and shut off any negative emotions until she can’t take it anymore and explodes, much like she did in her first magic usage. Isa shuts off and suppresses magic usage until it comes to learning or doing things that are absolutely necessary or help defend people, leading her to be mildly horrible at studies such as Astronomy and Charms while being very adept at Defense Against the Dark Arts.

In addition to the dark and Erklings, Isa is scared of being perceived as boring. Growing up she would fill her life with activities and would never really take time to contemplate or think over things. She liked to fit in while also being the center of attention and, unknowingly, built a false persona around herself as a never unhappy, coolly brave, and confident character. Going to Hogwarts gave Isa the chance to start all over and, though she has retained somewhat of a confident, nonchalant personality, she’s working on being more transparent and open with her friends while ditching the aloofness of her false persona.

What Isa wants most in life is to build a connection with her mother. All throughout childhood, she wondered why her she would always be away from the house and started hating both her and the magical world. As Isa got older, she realized that her mother’s place in the Ministry protected the wizarding world at large and that her mother wasn’t purposefully cold or distant but just didn’t know exactly how to interact with her daughter. Though the two never really got close, Isa secretly wanted to have a more of a connection with her mom.

Style and items:

When Isa isn’t in Hogwarts robes or Gryffindor merchandise, she can usually be found wearing bright 80s style jeans and sweatshirts. She likes to listen to punk rock and occasionally pop music.

When Isa goes questing, she makes sure to bring her wand with her. Though she’s still a beginner, she’s been able to quickly pick up defensive and offensive spells. She also brings her hockey stick along with her as well as several balls so that she can have some entertainment. If she has to climb a rocky hill or hit someone suddenly, her hockey stick is also a very good option for that. One final item that Isa makes sure to have is some sort of healing essence, usually Essence of Dittany. Despite being proficient in defensive and offensive spells, Isa is sometimes unable to cast simpler spells such as healing charms so she carries around essences as a backup.

Physical appearance:

EACF6-D77-B7-CB-4-A1-F-BA5-A-D975-A54485

The Isa Vestal in HOL is currently a 12-year old 139 centimeter tall girl but her adventurer self is a few years older and 15 centimeters taller. She has long, silky, silver-blonde hair and electric green eyes with cat-like pupils. She has fair to lightly tanned skin depending on the time of year and has freckles all across her face. She is short and has a slightly bulky build. One interesting feature of hers is her abnormally pointy, fang-like teeth. They don’t allow for any special abilities but they do allow Isa to cosplay as vampires and cats very easily!

As Isa is half Japanese-half British, she has a combination of European and Asian features. Her green eyes came from her dad while her silver hair was likely from her mom, who grayed very quickly. When Isa was younger, she had pitch black hair, following her Japanese heritage, but from the time she was seven, her hair began turning gray as a result of stress from magic suppression. For a while, Isa would dye her hair black but, when she got her Hogwarts letter and decided to go, she let her silver hair grow out, thinking it would be nice to both embrace her hair and also that it would fit in with a more “witchy” vibe. Even after Isa stopped suppressing her magic, the silver hair continued to grow, though she doesn’t exactly know why. Though she hates that her eye and hair colors combined make the Slytherin colors (as she is a Gryffindor and has even gotten angry at a few Slytherins for remarking on the fact after her house lost to theirs in a quidditch match), she has come to love its color.

My quester would be me. I am young, but strong, and workout every day. I am a proud Gryffindor and my spiritual self has many weaknesses, as for me, I would not like to share my personal weaknesses. My spiritual self is Lady Amaryllis, and it comes from a story my friend wrote about all my classmates. She doesn't have a wand, because she uses her mineral powers and controls her kingdom with her mind and her hand. She has a pet ruby named Bloodrock, a pet sapphire named Thorn Nightshade, a pet emerald named Mintlight, a pet diamond named Crystallize, a pet amethyst named Violet Night, and many, many more. Her mother, the fairy Thorn, was a Twilight Fairy and loved her daughter more than anything. Her father, the Dawn Fairy Sunlight, was a wizard and raised his daughter like a princess. She became a Midday Fairy and loved minerals because of her pets, and that's the story! I used to have brown hair going into blue at the tips, with an orange-red-yellow-pink eye color, the color of the sunset, but ever since someone took over my self, she has become shadowed. Now she has silver hair going into blue at the tips, and her eyes are blue into purple into black sunset color. She has been sitting by the Lake of Loneliness and stopped caring for her mineral kingdom. My quester, aka Amaryllis, wore a green brocade dress with rubies and sapphires all over before she became lonely. Now she wears a silver dress with blue tips and embroidered with diamonds and and sapphires because of the loneliness that wraps its arms around her.
