  1. If I do listen to music while I'm reading, it has to be instrumental music, otherwise I wouldn't be reading, but singing along to the song. I would do what I used to do when I taught 5th grade... go online (You Tube) and find some soft instrument music to play as the kids worked. In time they were comfortable listening to the music and if I forgot to play something, they would remind me. But to say what specific songs I would pick would be difficult, as I would listen to whatever was mixed already. But a few of my favorite pieces would be: Fur Elise by Beethoven, it reminds me of my mother or my sister playing the piano in the evening after dinner. This was usually the first song they would play. Claire de Lune by Debussy, I think this is one of the most soothing pieces of music to listen to. Beethoven's Ode To Joy because, really, everyone knows this one and to be it brings back memories of going to the movies to see The Beatles' movie Help and in one scene Ringo had the whole pub singing along to it. If it's around the Christmas holidays, I would have to have Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker playing. It's so hard to pick just one song from it that is my favorite, but I think it has to be The Waltz of the Flowers. My last piece I listen to is Dvorak's New World Symphony... just because it's a family tradition, somewhere along the lines on my hubby's side, he is related to him. I'm still doing the family tree to see just how they are related.
  2. I'd like to buy: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett Charlotte's Web by E.B. Webb
  3. Book Fairs! They are the one con of working in a school. I see books that I could by for myself, the class, and even the family. I'd pick up a few bookmarks, fancy ones, ones that matches a book I'd buy, and just plain ones. You can never have enough book marks, it's not nice to dog ear the pages of any book. Of course, I'd pick up some new parchment and quills. Maybe a few of the Self-inking quills, you know how those ink pots spill and leave spots all over the parchment. Also I would pick out a nice briefcase to hold files, the extra parchment and quills. Now for books, believe it our not, I would get a book about Quidditch, because even after all these years, I still don't have a clue on how to play that game. I have tried to understand it, and many people have tried to explain it to me, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Another book I would choose is Tuck Everlasting. I do have a copy of it, but I have read it so many times it's worn out and pages and falling out of it. Time for a new copy. I think I would pick up some picture books, yes, picture books, it's nice to have some available with family comes over with their little kids.
  4. We have a yearly event here where I live, it's not called a carnival, but a Fair. It has most everything a carnival has, rides, food, games, but it also showcases farm animals of the area. There's cows, sheep, pigs, chicken and rabbits that local families or kids raise. Different types of "museums", farm equipment, cars, fire trucks and even a one room school house. And of course there is the fair food... sausage and onions, french fires, hamburgers, hot dogs, fried dough, pizza, cotton candy, all types of candy, but the one thing I go for is .... the Italian ice. Having lived in the Italian section of the Bronx, I grew up with a nightly walk to the bakery, yes the bakery, to get a treat of lemon Italian ice during the summer. They had other flavors.. chocolate, cherry, and many more, but my favorite was and still is lemon. Now at this Fair, there's an Italian Ice cart that sells the same brand of Italian ice that they sell in the Bronx. So anytime we went to the Fair, we HAD to go get a large Italian Ice. At one time our church ran a restaurant at the Fair as sort of a fund raiser for the church. My family and I would volunteer there a few times during the week the Fair ran for, and after our shift, yes, we headed over to the Italian Ice cart for our yearly treat.

  7. Blueberry Hill! (Fats Domino) What is your favorite color?
  8. When I was a kid we used to play "Stoop Ball". Basically all you need are 1 or 2 people, a ball, we played with the best rubber ball ever... a Spalding rubber ball. To play, one person stands about 10 - 15 feet away from the stoop (oh for those who don't know, a stoop is a small staircase ending in a platform and leading to the entrance of an apartment building or other building) and you throw the ball at the stoop. If you catch it on one bounce it's worth 5 points, if you catch it on a fly, it's worth 10 points. If playing with 2 people, after how many "innings" you decided on, the person with the most points ... win!
