Designing a Retro Kitchen

I’ve always dreamed of having a vintage kitchen! I adore their bright colors and their unusual color choices. Fortunately, I enjoy being surrounded by pastels. I also love that those retro kitchens, despite the pastels weren’t always “complex;” as in they often had clean lines, rather than complex patterns. Something about them is relaxing and yet exciting at the same time.

I’ve thought a long time about how I would design my kitchen. First, I’d have to have a black and white checkered floor. I’ve seen some checkered floors that are red and white, but they aren’t quite to my taste. Next, I’d have to select colors. I know the color red will be in the accents, because I collect Coke decor already, but I need to select something for the walls and appliances. For retro appliances, I love colors such as Mint Green, Buttercup Yellow, Robin’s Egg Blue, and Petal Pink, especially for the refrigerator and wall cabinets. I have to have pastel cabinets. Tough decision! Knowing me, I’ll go for the green. It will match my green living room!

Once the floors, walls, and appliances are chosen, next up is the kitchen table. My current one is hard wood, antique. I want to trade that one in for a 1950’s chrome kitchen table and chairs.

Next up is the accessories. I already own tupperware. That stuff is amazing for storage, and I’d use it even if I didn’t love vintage, but in this case it adds to my decor beautifully. To further my theme, I plan to eventually add a retro mixer and a breadbasket. Details are important, and I’m also going to add an old clock. Some of those look amazing!

Lots of retro kitchens add breakfast nooks, but that’s never really been my style. Many have lots of interesting signage as well, but that isn’t me, although I do enjoy the pops of red from my Coca-Cola collection.

If you’re thinking about designing your own retro kitchen, I hope some of these ideas helps!
