Point Earning Opportunities (Spring Term 2019)

Recommended Posts

The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths.

In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back!

The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul.

Class sign-up opened February 1st 2019 and will remain open until May 20th so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself)

The next are the creative projects offered each month by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, visit the 'Departments' tab on the main website. Don't be shy: your submissions are always anonymous. You can get started by going to your profile and telling us 'How I Got Into Harry Potter' in the designated section - that will earn you a cool 10 points!

Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things.

All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too).  The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with.

Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

Hello (again), Gryffindor!

It’s the start of term and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go sign up for classes. Not only are classes incredibly fun and magical but they’re the best way to earn points and help us in our fight to climb our way up the house cup rankings. Every little helps so even if you can only take one or two, that’s still doing your bit for the Scarlet and Gold (if you’re a new member, HOL 101 is super helpful and tons of fun). Sign-ups are open now so go go go go!

If you’ve signed up for classes and are wondering if there’s anything else you can do besides homework, the answer is: YES. There absolutely is and you’re in the right place to hear about it.

First up is the Alte Sententiam, Ravenclaw’s newspaper. You’ll have to act fast on this one as they’re only accepting submissions up until tomorrow (February 3rd) but I’m sure you can write like the wind and get something turned in.

Bingo:

And the fantastically named Drabble Babble:

Deadline: 3rd February

Next up is our very own paper, The Paw Print. Our February issue is all about your favourite things so if you’ve been yearning to write about your love of polka dancing or chocolate covered sardines (or you know… Something a bit more sensible but less epic), look no further than the Quivering Quill Forum a little way down below this one. Just follow the sound of Prof. Zenix’s frantic scribbling. :P

Deadline: 26th February

Last but by no means least is SerpenTimes, Slytherin’s snaky periodical. They’re getting colourful and chaotic this time with a theme of ‘kaleidoscope’. You can write according to that theme or choose something completely different, I know they’d love to hear whatever ideas you have. Remember to check out their Exclusives for an entertaining and easy 40 points too!

Pay a visit to the Dungeons for more details (mind out for their pet basilisk)

Deadline: 15th March

That’s all I have for you this time but keep your eyes open for fresh point earning opportunities coming at you soon! I hope you have a sensational, successful and above all, magical term.

2, 4, 6, 8, we know Gryffs are really great

8, 6, 4, 2, proving that is up to you!

   The hills are alive….

With the sound of point earning opportunities

First and foremost, the HOL Departments are open for business again! Whether you like to make graphics or to express yourself with words, I’m sure you’ll find a project for you. This month, The Art Department is designing personalised Timetables and advertisements for your favourite classes of the term. In the Library, there’s the chance to look back in time to those subjects that have fallen out of favour at Hogwarts or to tell a tale about something that isn’t quite right. All in all, there’s a maximum of 70 points to play for (and you’re now guaranteed half of that just for taking part)

Deadline: 30th April

Next up, there’s something very magical going on on the HOL Forum. Story Book takes us through a series of beloved Fairy Tales, with a host of creative and puzzle tasks that will make sure you never look at Cinderella’s fairy godmother or Snow White’s poisoned apple in quite the same way again. There are 80 points in all to be earned so get your glass slippers over there, stat.

Deadline: April 30th

Whether it’s cars, films, novels, music or history, classics hold a special place in our hearts. For their final issue of the year, SerpenTimes are celebrating everything classical (whatever that means to you). Head over to the Dungeons to see what you can contribute and make sure to check out the Grab Bag, Magic Moments and Superlative threads while you’re there. There’s up to 90 points to earn so don’t delay!

Deadline: June 15th

Finally, the staff at Gryffindor’s own Paw Print  are feeling sunny (and fizzy and funny and fine…). They’d like your articles, editorials, stories, poems, recipes, captions and really anything else you’d like to send, all on the theme of the real or emotional sunshine in your life. Head over to the Quivering Quill and remember to check out Prose and Cons as well. Bring the house some sunshine and make sure you snag all 80 points available (while making sure we have the best end of term issue possible, of course).

Deadline: June 15th

The end of term and the school year are getting ever closer. Gryffindor might be lagging behind in the cup standings but that doesn’t mean that we should just coast for the rest of the year. We need to finish as strongly as we can so we can hold our heads up high and that means we need each and every one of you to earn as many points as you can. Find your lions pride, sharpen your quills and let’s do this!

First off: do you know when your homework is due? June deadlines are in the middle of the month so make absolutely sure you leave yourself plenty of time to hand everything in. Snagging yourself those all important quills and adding rubies to the hourglass at the same time, what could be better?

The Departments are going strong. This month, the Library is offering you the chance to interview someone famous from the wizarding world and to inform the Ministry of what exactly Hogwarts needs. The Art Department are redecorating the castle and heading outside for a spot of gardening. There’s a minimum of 40 points up for grabs and a maximum of 80 so make sure you drop by. There will be some smaller projects released for the first half of June so stay tuned for those as well!

Deadline: 31st May for May projects.

Newspapers, newspapers everywhere! The Alte Sententiam is on the road again and gathering material for their final issue of the year (while offering you the chance to earn 90 points!). The theme is the very poetic sounding ‘two roads’ but I’m sure they’d love any articles you’d like to write. Talk to Gail Allen about article ideas or check out their writing and photography challenges.

Drabble Babble:

Bingo:

Deadline: 31st May

It’s absolutely classic. For their final issue of the year, SerpenTimes are celebrating classics of all kinds: music, books, cars, periods in history… you name it. Head over to the Dungeons to see what you can contribute and make sure to check out the Grab Bag, Magic Moments and Superlative threads while you’re there. There are 90 points available so do a classic Hermione Granger and bag them all.

Deadline: June 15th

We’re basking in the sunshine over at the Gryffindor Paw Print. That doesn’t mean we’re slacking though: please send your articles, editorials, stories, poems, recipes, captions and anything else you can think of. Head over to the Quivering Quill and remember to check out Prose and Cons as well. There are 80 points up  for grabs so make sure you get your paws on all of them!

Deadline: June 15th

In case you’ve not been keeping track, that’s over 300 extra points on offer in a variety of weird and  wonderful ways. Even if you can’t manage to earn them all, every little helps. Go have fun and gain some glory for the scarlet and gold!

Let’s go, Gryffindor, let’s go!
