Point Earning Opportunities (Autumn Term 2018)

Recommended Posts

The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths.

In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the Autumn Term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back!

The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul.

Class sign-up opened on September 1st 2018 and will remain open until December 20th so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself)

The next are the creative projects offered by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, look out for when the Departments reopen later in the year.

Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things.

All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too).  The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with.

Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

Back to witches and wizards and magical beasts, to goblins and ghosts and to magical feasts….

Alright, I’ll stop singing so long as you go sign up for classes

There’s also already an extra point earning opportunity on the horizon: the SerpenTimes are accepting submissions for their first issue of the school year! The theme is community so whatever that means to you, I’m sure you can find something fun to fit. Visit the SerpenTimes forum on the Dungeons or Prof. Scarlet’s post in The Great Hall on the main HOL forum for details.

Deadline: October 15th

Now… about those classes?

Another stop press announcement: the Ravenclaw Alte Sententiam is open for business. The theme of this issue is highly appropriate for us lions, courage! There’s plenty you could do to show off your daring: write an article, make some graphics, take some photos and most especially write some stories for the Drabble Babble and bingo challenges. See Gail Allen’s posts in the Great Hall or simply follow the announcement under ‘From the Common Rooms’ on the homepage.

Deadline: 10th October

Ever wanted to become one of your favourite fictional characters? Over on the main forum, you have the chance to do just that and earn an impressive 120 house points as well. You’ll chat to and compete against a host of other famous fictional folk while having fun and showing off your knowledge and love of your character. Check out the ‘Character Clash’ area on the HOL forum or use the announcement on the homepage to click through.

Deadline: Sign-ups close on 29th September so get yourself over to the forum ASAP!

November is a quiet month around HOL and the Common Room so it’s the perfect time to cuddle up by the fire, drink hot chocolate and earn some extra points. Lots of extra points!

The Paw Print needs you! Our own Editor in Chief is taking submissions for a frosty themed issue: check out the Quivering Quill for ideas of what you could come up with and remember Professor Zenix is always there to bounce ideas off of (just ideas, mind you. Anyone caught bouncing dungbombs off her better watch out). Remember there’s Prose and Cons too for a fun, extra 30 points! Let’s make it the best issue yet.

Deadline: 25th November

Our friends in the Dungeons (the Slytherin Common Room for those of you still learning the HOL vernacular) are also getting ready for the January issue of their own paper, the SerpenTimes. Well, it’s a Work In progress… no, really, that’s the theme. They would love to receive your articles, reviews, recipes, puzzles, graphics and anything else you can come up with. Remember their exciting exclusives for another lot of extra points. Check out the SerpenTimes forum in the Dungeons for full details.

Deadline: 15th January

It’s nearly the end of term (and no, unfortunately, I don’t have a song prepared this time… hang on, what do you mean ‘yay’?). That means it’s time to secure some last minute points! We may be behind but we’re not out of this game yet. Let’s show some lions pride here, Gryffs! Rawww!

Ehem…

Have you turned your homework in? If not, why not? Seriously, it’s not too late. Even if you’re very behind, you can still turn some work in and salvage some points. Every little helps. Make sure you know when your deadlines are.

If you’re on top of your homework (congrats, by the way), don’t just lounge by the lake. For one thing, it’s a bit cold for that yet and for another, it’s a very busy time for Hogwarts Journalism.

The Serpentimes are accepting submissions up until the 15th of January. There’s 90 points up for grabs and lots of fun to be had so head over to the Dungeons.

Deadline: 15th January

Ravenclaw are eagerly (or should that be eagle-y) awaiting your articles, stories, graphics and anything you’d like to send them. There’s another 90 points available over there. You can message Gail Allen for help with finding what to write (don’t be shy!). You can also read all about their fabulous creative writing sections over on the main forum.

Bingo:

And the world famous (school famous? Little bit famous) Drabble Babble:

http://forum.hol.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31031

Deadline: 3rd February

And of course it would be remiss of me not to mention our very own scarlet and gold publication, The Paw Print. Prof. Zenix would absolutely love to receive anything you’d like to send us. Our February issue is all about your favourite things so if you’ve been yearning to write about your love of stick insects or opera singing walruses (or you know… Something a bit more sensible but less epic), look no further than the Quivering Quill Forum just down below. I won’t link you this time, just take a left at that really squashy purple armchair. :P

Deadline: 26th February

That’s quite enough from me. You have points to earn. Let’s go, Gryffindor, let's go!
