Point Earning Opportunities (Spring 2018)

Recommended Posts

The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths.

In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the spring Term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back!

The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul.

Class sign-up opened on February 1st 2018 so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself)

The next are the creative projects offered by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, have a look at current and past projects, as well as keeping an eye open for new ones.

Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things.

All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too).  The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with.

And Hufflepuff’s Wizarding Times:

Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!

We’re drawing towards the end of term. Gryffindor is doing amazingly for points but I can’t stress enough how much we need everyone (that includes you) to keep earning them in any way you can. Let’s try and keep hold of our place in the rankings for as long as humanly possible and show the rest of the school what we’re truly made of. Roar!

The Alte Sententiam is encouraging us to strike out with a spot of exploration. In addition to getting adventurous with some articles, adds, puzzles or graphics, they also have their Drabble section (for photos and stories of exactly 100 words) and creative writing Bingo. Submit article ideas too alte.sententiam @gmail.com or chat to Gail Allen and she might be able to help you find something to write. Check the Great Hall on the HOL forum for Drabble and Bingo information.

Deadline: 31st May

SerpenTimes are taking submissions for their ‘Oasis’ themed summer issue. Rippling water, swaying palms, the bright lights of a city at night or even a past era: whatever makes up your personal oasis, I’m sure there’s an article, puzzle or graphic in it. If you’re not the journalistic type, remember you can submit a short story, photography and some fun and easy award nominations for extra points with their Exclusives. Head to the Dungeons for more info: http://www.dungeons.org.uk/forum/index.php?/forum/161-serpentimes/

Deadline: June 15th

The end of term is even closer now. Remember that your final deadlines will be some time in the middle of June: don't miss them! Even if you've fallen behind with your classes, there's still time to earn some points and maybe even a quill  or too. Earn yourself some glory and help Gryff finish the year in as strong a position as possible while you do.

Remember, there's still over a week to earn some fun points by turning things in for SerpenTimes: check my previous reply for details.

This is the final stretch: wherever you are currently, you've got this.

It’s the summer but there’s still a chance to earn some points and put yourself (and the house) in a strong position at the start of next term. The Book Club is discovering how communication changed over the centuries and they need your help. Check out the History of the Word subforum on the HOL forum for puzzles, creative challenges and the chance to dive into ancient cultures. There are 30 house points up for grabs each week until July 29th. Lions are already taking part which is amazing - keep it up you guys! (Check out the Reading Challenge while you’re there)

Once you’re done with those points, there are also activities going on all over (they’re worth beans and other non-point shaped things but I’ll break with tradition and include them as it’s summer!). As well as our own summer quest, there are summer camps from Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff and a chance to backpack with Hollers. The Summer Quidditch league is going on so be sure to take the opportunity to brush up on your flying (and your trivia). Check out the posts on the HOL blog for links to everything going on!
