  16. We’re drawing towards the end of term. Gryffindor is doing amazingly for points but I can’t stress enough how much we need everyone (that includes you) to keep earning them in any way you can. Let’s try and keep hold of our place in the rankings for as long as humanly possible and show the rest of the school what we’re truly made of. Roar! The Alte Sententiam is encouraging us to strike out with a spot of exploration. In addition to getting adventurous with some articles, adds, puzzles or graphics, they also have their Drabble section (for photos and stories of exactly 100 words) and creative writing Bingo. Submit article ideas too alte.sententiam or chat to Gail Allen and she might be able to help you find something to write. Check the Great Hall on the HOL forum for Drabble and Bingo information. Deadline: 31st May SerpenTimes are taking submissions for their ‘Oasis’ themed summer issue. Rippling water, swaying palms, the bright lights of a city at night or even a past era: whatever makes up your personal oasis, I’m sure there’s an article, puzzle or graphic in it. If you’re not the journalistic type, remember you can submit a short story, photography and some fun and easy award nominations for extra points with their Exclusives. Head to the Dungeons for more info: Deadline: June 15th
  17. The easiest way to help out your house and show your lion’s pride is to earn points! There are lots of ways you can do this so you’re bound to find some that play to your strengths. In this post, I’ll give you a brief run-down of the regular point earning opportunities available to you. Whenever a new one opens up throughout the spring Term, I’ll post it as a reply so keep checking back! The first and most obvious is to take part in classes. Most classes will give you the chance to earn 60 points a month through homework and extra credit. If you take several classes (even if you don’t have the time for the maximum of 5 every term), those 60 points soon mount up to quite a tidy haul. Class sign-up opened on February 1st 2018 so remember to put your name down for the classes that interest you and get sending in that homework! (It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the individual assignment deadlines so that you don’t run out of time or put too much pressure on yourself) The next are the creative projects offered by the Hol Library and art department. If you enjoy getting artsy or brushing up on your writing, have a look at current and past projects, as well as keeping an eye open for new ones. Finally there are the house newspapers. These are a great chance to earn plenty of points by writing about what interests you. If articles and reviews aren’t your thing, most also offer creative prompts and even the chance to submit your own puzzles, recipes, graphics and many other things. All of them have different windows for submitting so be sure to check The Great Hall on the Hol Forum and the Common Rooms for announcements from the editors of each (I’ll be doing my best to keep you clued up about the deadlines for all of them here too). The most important thing to remember is that whenever you have some spare time to get journalistic, you’re almost certain to find a home for what you come up with. Visit our own Paw Print: Slytherin’s SerpenTimes: Ravenclaw’s Alte Sententiam: And Hufflepuff’s Wizarding Times: Throughout the term, there will be unique and exciting activities to take part in which will give you the chance to earn points along the way. Remember to check my replies to this thread for announcements and reminders about anything that might be occurring!
  18. Ash slips and slides under your feet, nearly sending you to your knees (again). You pause, taking deep breaths of the soupy air. A faint breeze ripples over the blasted landscape. The path curves around a shoulder of volcanic rock up ahead. You’ve no idea how much longer it will take to reach the summit. Or, you think as another plume of smoke shoots into the air, whether you really want to. You stumble on up the track, running over the only clue you have to what you’re here to retrieve The Treasure (10 beans): Crafted of gold by Hephaestus, I make you fleet of foot. What am I? Do some research and put your answer at the top of your submission You make it a little further before you have to pause, sinking down on a rock. You slowly turn your head, taking in the desolation around you. The Journey (20 beans): Make a graphic of the volcanic landscape you’ve found yourself in. Upload your image to an image hosting site and include the URL in your submission. The air is much colder up near the top. A bird cries from somewhere above and a fleeting dark shadow passes low over you. The wind whips gritty ash into your face and you duck your head, trying to protect your eyes. You are so preoccupied with this that you nearly pitch forward into a deep crater with sheer sides. Scrambling to regain your footing on the disintegrating ground, you catch sight of a gleam of gold in the dark depths of the hole. The treasure is down there, far out of your reach. The bird from before, a magnificent gold and red phoenix, comes into land on a boulder around 20 feet away and gives you a look as if to say ‘so, now what you gonna do?’ Victory (20 beans): In 100 words, describe how you would retrieve the treasure from the hole. There is no right or wrong answer: just so long as it makes sense. You have: What’s around you as well as a length of rope (but nowhere to tie it), a metal spike, some food and a little water You cannot: Summon the object (as it is immune to magic) or climb down the sides unaided as they are two steep The deadline is 11.59 PM HOL-time on April 30th. Send all your tasks in one private message to me (Sky Alton). Once the deadline has passed, feel free to share your images and or your solutions as a reply to this thread (but only AFTER the deadline).

  21. The novel. I mean I'm pretty much doing that anyway as I've got one set of characters in my head who will not pipe down, no matter what else I'm working on. Would you rather cook for someone or have them cook for you?
